schaffer, a civilian investigator, was very critical of these missions. but these lasted from about 1951 until 1954. by that point, the stasi was fully aware of what was going on. they had put an informant to meet one of these west germans on these operations. this west german was then arrested by the east germans for bribery. that essentially shut down the mission of using these private german investigators in the east zone. just quickly, even though the soviets refused, there were still glimmers of hope. in the spring of 1951, the nine united states and soviets exchanged teams to go into each zone to look at grave s registration issues. again in 1954 and in 1955, the army went back to east germany to conduct recovery missions. here is a quote from the doctor, the soviets could not believe how serious the united states was about this humanitarian work. why we were pursuing this. i do want to say, the others question comes up, was there any intelligence interest by the united states, because this is one of the few ways united states was having official ac
