schaffner, thank you very much for helping us understand this breaking news. >> my pleasure. >>> the new covid variant has already rattled global markets. the dow had the worst day in more than a year. taking a nosedive and closing more than 900 points down. cnn's matt egan joins me now. matt, we saw similar trends when delta first emerged. what is happening? >> well the news of this variant is not going over well on wall street. it was just 48 hours ago that we were talking about how wall street economists were upgrading their forecasts for the u.s. economy and this recovery was gaining steam but this variant calls all of that into question. so we saw the dow fall 905 points, 2.5%. that is the worst day since october of 2020. that is before the election, before the vaccine breakthroughs, let alone that they were readily available. s&p 500 down 2%. two stats that sum up the mood of the market, one oil prices down 13% to around $68 a barrel and that is the worst day since april of 2020 and that is a big deal because oil is sensitive to swings in the economy. and vaccine maker moderna

william schaffner. i thought we were out of the woods. now we're talking about travel restrictions. my goodness. travel restrictions in the u.s. don't begin until monday and even then, there are so many people it doesn't apply to as nick valencia was just talking about a few minutes ago. is a travel ban the best way to contain or slow down this virus? is it time to start thinking about, you know, vaccine mandates for travelers flying around the world? i suppose the horse is out of the barn at this point. >> well, jim, these are sobering times, right? we were all optimistic that we were nearing the end of at least the pandemic phase and now covid has thrown us another big curve ball. we don't have all the information about this omicron strain but it looks very contagious and the early data, as you're reporting, as shown -- suggests that it can at least in part evade some of the protection from our current vaccines. travel restrictions are something you do as was said to buy some time. by their nature, they're very porous. there are lots of people who have exceptions to the travel. u.
