schaffner. and when you look at close to half the covid-19 tests being performed at children's national hospital in washington, d.c., half of them are coming back positive. are kids getting sicker from omicron? or just more kids getting this variant because it's so much more contagious? >> i think it's the latter, poppy. this is such an extraordinarily contagious various, it is getting not only adults but it's getting down into children. spreading among them and even in the portion of children who get serious illness is small, if you infect a very large number of children, there will be an increase in the number of cases of children to need hospitalization. some have underlying illnesses but many do not. parents, let's get all those children age 5 and over vaccinated as quickly as possible. >> yeah, and let's get the vaccine approved for those under 5 years old that's what we are praying for in our household. bob, when you have what i would assume is more hospitals to come that will issue that,

schaffner, first to you. of a difference will this new pfizer pill make in the fight against the pandemic? >> well, it's certainly good news, wolf, that we have some treatment available in addition to the vaccines. the treatment is not a substitute for the vaccines. but we need a good system in order to get this good treatment to people. you make a very good point in the segments coming just up to this, because testing is key. you have to get a positive test before you can qualify for the use of paxlovid. we're going to have to improve testing so people can get their tests quickly. then when they're positive, ve to go to their health care provider, those providers will have to learn how to write those prescriptions, but then you can go to the pharmacy quickly, get your medication, and it's very, very reassuring that these medicines reduce the risk of the infections maturing to seriousness such that you have to be hospitalized. we look forward to it and it's all now in the implementation. the theory is great.

schaffner, there is some news coming out of south africa about the omicron variant. it says there is a three-fold increase in reinfection if you've had covid, so reinfection even if you have the antibodies. one, does that surprise you, and two, what does it mean for the vaccines? >> katy, it doesn't surprise me a great deal, because let's focus on the severity of illness. in south africa, they're keeping these folks out of the hospital. these are relatively minor illnesses. we can deal with that, that's not so bad. actually it reinforces the fact that these vaccines are pretty good. the cases -- two swallows don't make a summer, but the cases we've seen in the united states, neither of those omicron cases have required hospitalization. looks as though the vaccine's working pretty well. remember, the vaccines are designed to keep us out of the hospital, to prevent severe disease. we can deal with minor illnesses 'til the cows come home, that's not a problem. >> that's a really good point. jake, the first case of omicron was detected in san francisco. we got news of it
