i'm mara schiavocampo. millions along the northeast corridor are humpingering down for an epic winter storm. folks are stocking up and filling up their tanks in anticipation of the massive nor'easter packing blizzard speed winds and cripples feet of snow. airlines have already canceled thousands of flights as the storm comes across the country. nbc's meteorologist dylan dreyer is tracking the storm. >> the best part about it, it's happening today and into the weekend. a lot of schools already canceled up across massachusetts which is good because you don't want all those kids coming home as the start gets going. we mentioned it's two parts. here's part one back across the great lakes and you can see all of this moisture moving into virginia and north carolina. we have torrential downfalls right now. you see new york city is at 33 degrees. that's going to be an area where we will see that snow start off as rain and then it changes in the back side of the storm. so most of today, it's okay in new york city bu

i'm mara schiavocampo. states of emergency were declared across the midwest as snow poured down thanks to a powerful and deadly winter storm that's now crawling east. the storm is expected to hit the upper midwest by this morning as it swirls north and east packing an icy wintry mix that's sure to make or treacherous travel and even more flight cancellations as we head into the weekend. nbc's jay gray has a look. >> reporter: this time-lapsed video shows kansas city being swallowed by the snow. whiteout conditions across the midwest. >> it's crazy, i wasn't expecting this. maybe around christmas but not now. >> reporter: the harsh winds and heavy snow certainly no gift for those forced to deal with brutal conditions. >> it's not for me. >> reporter: terrible for just about everyone. snow in many places falling at two inches an hour. piling up too fast for shovels or plows to keep up. driving was next to impossible. even for some of the street crews. parts of i-70 were shut down because of the weather and so

i'm mara schiavocampo. we begin with what the white house is calling a, quote, highly provocative act by north korea. the country to find world powers in conducting a third nuclear test overnight. it happened in the northeastern part of the country on a street google maps identifies as nuclear test road, seriously. pyongyang reported an explosion three hours after activity was detected in neighboring south korea. they described it as a miniature size missile. small enough to be mounted on a missile that could reach the u.s. it's the country's third test since 2006 and the first under leader king jong-un. president obama went on to say move hurts stability in the region but promises to pursue firm action. the u.s. security council has scheduled an emergency meeting for later this morning. and china has shown opposition to the test. >>> fugitive chris dorner is on today from the police dragnet in los angeles. the former lapd cop has been officially charged with killing michael crane in riverside last thursday

i'm mara schiavocampo. former olympian oscar pistorius back in court this morning and there are new details emerging on the murder case against him. the track star arrived just hours ago for a bail hearing in the south african capital. prosecutors say pistorius fired four shots at girlfriend reeva steenkamp during her bath door last week, the 29-year-old model was hit three times and the bathroom door later broken open. pistorius was arrested thursday and charged with premeditated murder. a sentence capable of carrying a life sentence. defense lawyers say the killing was nut murder. >>> meanwhile, funeral service being held in port elizabeth. it capped six days of dramatic fall from grace for the man known as south africa golden boy. today, major sponsors like oakley and nike are cutting ties with pistorius say they go will no longer use him in future ads. >>> turning now to gas prices. and the surprising pace which they've been climbing. regular gas has gone up for the last 32 days, 43 cents in a month. nb
