and now from cbs news in washington, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: good morning again. and welcome to "face the nation." david axelrod is the senior advisor to president obama. mr. axelrod, let's just start with the headline news. just when we thought the housing crisis, which was, let us not forget, the beginning of our economic problem-- just when we thought it couldn't get any worse, now we find that this sloppy paperwork by the lenders may have made some of these foreclosures now that are being contemplated invalid. some of the biggest lenders are now freezing foreclosures until they can get all this straightened out. i guess the first question i would have is, does the administration favor some kind of national moratorium on these foreclosures to get this all sorted out? >> first of all, bob, it is a serious problem. it's thrown a lot of uncertainty into the housing market that, as you know, is already fragile. it's bad for the housing market and it's bad for these institutions, which is why they're scrambling now to go back through their documentation for all of t

and now from cbs news election headquarters in new york, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: and we start this morning from washington. john brennan, who is president obama's chief counterterrorism advisor, mr. brennan, there's no other way to put it, the more we seem to find out about these bombs that were found on these cargo planes, the more this sounds like a really close call. how powerful do you think these bombs were? >> with, the investigation is still ongoing. and the forensic analysis is being done. but i think the british assessment this time as well as the saudis was that it was a very viable ied that could have been detonated aboard that aircraft and could have brought the aircraft down. >> schieffer: do you think that that was the objective? i mean these bombs were addressed to these synagogues in chicago. do you have any idea what the target was for these bombs? >> well, they were addressed to locations in chicago that have been associated with synagogues. we're looking at the potential that they would have been detonated en route to those synagogues aboard the aircraft as well

and now, from washington, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: and good morning again. we want to begin this morning with some breaking news that has happened since your sunday newspaper came out. the state department this morning issued a travel alert to americans about potential terrorist threats in europe and urges all u.s. citizens to be extra vigilant when they are in public places in europe. tourist spots, transportation hubs, and so forth. u.s. and european security experts have been concerned for the last week or so that terrorists may be plotting attacks in europe similar to the 2008 attack in mumbai, india. this is one step below warning americans not to travel to specific places, but it's been some time since americans were warned to take extra precautions when going to europe. apparently, europe is considerably worried this morning about possible attacks. britain's foreign office has upgraded its travel advice to its citizens going to france and germany. so we will keep you informed as more details on this become available. well, now to the political news, w

and now from washington, bob schieffer. >> schieffer: good morning again. welcome to all of our guests. let's see here. howard dean is in burlington, vermont. liz cheney and bill galston are here in the studio with me. and lindsey graham is at clemson, south carolina. i pretty much stated the conventional wisdom in the opening there. the thinking here in washington seems to be whether or not they actually get a majority in either house, republicans are going to pick up a lot of seats in the next congress. i don't think there's anybody who would argue otherwise. but here's the question. whether they take the majority or not, what is ahead? are the two sides going to find a way to work together? or will there be just deeper and harder gridlock? let me start with you, governor dean. what do you think is ahead? >> i think... first of all, let me thank senator graham for his willingness to work together. but look what happened to him when he got home. the far right of his own party pilloried him. that's a big problem, not just on the right but all the districts

party. >> schieffer: all right. well, governor rendell, you're up there in what is always a key state, pennsylvania. a lot of those suburbs around philadelphia that the president carried last time out looks like he's going to have the candidates, democrats are going to have real trouble there. what is it that has caused this drift away from the president in your view that we saw so many independents were for the president in 2008 and also so many young people who so far despite that big rally that we saw out there in wisconsin haven't shown much interest in this election. its going to be hard for all democrats if that... those groups don't turn out this time around. >> well there's no question, bob. i think part of it is perception. i think the president has done a much better job than people perceive including the base. i meantime magazine had a wonderful piece two weeks ago about how far-reaching and changing our economy the stimulus was. i know you read it. it's incredible what they're doing in renewable energy a

"eighteen acres" and there is a female president. is the monologue for that sarah palin? >> many women i know in and out of politics have endured in the spotlight that inspired not just the female president but a lot of those characters. and i remember i was governor jeb bush's press secretary when hillary clinton went through what she went through as first lady with bill's indiscretions. i remember being so astounded by her grace and dignity at a time of, you know, such -- such difficult and i would imagine humiliating revelations at her husband. that stayed

somebody around who was so high profile but will you not see pete rouse on charlie rose or on bob schieffer lehrer: what about the newshour. >> that is a different show because it is a substantive show where you can speak to the nation on a thoughtful, serious manner. >> lehrer: he read it just exactly the way i wrote it. but i mean do you think that rouse is going to be that different? that we're to the going to hear about him in a public way and the president will be better served by him than he was by rahm emanuel? >> i think he's highly respected. both on the hill and within the administration. there is a long background with tom daschle in leadership in the senate so he knows the hill. and he has a good reputation among republicans on the hill. so you know, i think there's a lot to commend at least as a transitional figure. he is not guaranteeed this job from now on it is a difficult position to be in. and obama may need to reconstitute his administration in reaction to an electoral reversal in the midterm and you may need some kind of high profile, you know, outreach. >> a howard bake
