. >> schieffer: let's talk a little bit about what senator mcconnell just said. he said the stimulus package did not work and the main problem with getting people back to work is to simply stop the president doing what he's doing. democrats are going to be vulnerable on this, are they not? what's your reaction to what senator mcconnell said? >> my reaction is senator mcconnell didn't say one thing about how to create jobs. we should be doing that. we should be doing... deficit reduction is necessary but not sufficient. there hasn't been enough focus on jobs and job creation. we democrats are going to put forth an agenda this summer and this fall. jobs first. now economists will tell you or rather you look at the election and there were two mandates. one: get the deficit down. get rid of wasteful spending. but two and even more important create jobs and get the economy growing. an economist will tell you that one of the best ways to do that- - we're going to look at two things. one is infrastructure and one is some kind of encouraging of employment. now economists

for more insight on the poll and the president, bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation" joins us. bob, what did you see today? >> well, i'll tell you, scott, what you saw today was a very different president obama, and so did i. and that poll that you just cited may be the reason why. presidents know elections are about the economy, and when nearly 40% of the people have basically given up and think things will never get better, that's got to make any president feel vulnerable. what you saw today was a president on the war path with congress, and we really haven't seen that from him before. the republicans have been blaming him for the bad economic stuff. he threw it right back in their faces today, sort of what have you done lately? and here's a few things you can do. he basically said no deal on anything unless you tackle some of these billionaire tax breaks and he really ripped the republicans who say it is not crucial to raise that debt ceiling. of course, it is, he said, unless you want us to choose which of our bills to pay. he said, "do

. >> pelley: bob schieffer is our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation." what are the political realities the president addressed tonight. >> it was almost in his speech as if senator marchian wrote the last page. the president said, "it is time to focus on nation building here at home." i mean, that was the signal of how the priorities are shifting here, scott. i mean, yes, the military wants to go more slowly, and there's considerable criticism on the left from some-- from the right, on some military people tonight who say this is not a good strategy to be withdrawing this quickly because of the fighting that's going to come next summer. but the president's looking at these polls that say 56% of the american people, the majority, now want to leave afghanistan. that's justice the political reality here. >> pelley: bob, i wonder what you make of the fact the president says he's going to pull 33,000 troops out just weeks before the presidential election. >> well, i don't think that's a coincidence, scott. there's an election coming. >> pelley: and he's awar

bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation," joins us now with some insight into all of this. and, bob, you know, time is slipping by. i wonder, are they getting any closer to a deal? >> short answer, no. and i'll spare you the details, but the two sides, scott, are as far apart tonight on reducing the deficit as they were in january when this congress convened. republicans want deep cuts in spending. democrats say there has to be a lot of government tax breaks eliminated, and that's the standoff. these thing always go down to the wire. but here is what's different this time. republicans say they won't vote to raise the debt ceiling unless there's a deal on this deficit reduction, and that's where we move into very dangerous territory. unless this debt limit is raised so the government can borrow more money, it may have to start defaulting, as you said, on its financial obligations this summer. even talk that for the first time in history uncle sam is a deadbeat who can't pay his bills could send not only our economy, but the world economy, into

but boehner called it an artificial deadline, echoing what congresswoman michele bachmann told bob schieffer on "face the nation." >> first of all, it isn't true that the government would default on its debt because very simply the treasury secretary can pay the interest on the debt first and then from there we have to just prioritize our spending. >> pelley: so is the country facing an economic train wreck on the second of august? we asked anthony mason to find out. >> reporter: if the u.s. maxes- out its credit card, economists say, the treasury will still be able to make the interest payments on its debt. >> we're not going default, but that's irrelevant. at the end of the day if we don't raise the debt ceiling the economy will go back into recession, interest rates will spike. >> reporter: the recession will be deep, warns economist mark zandi who's advised candidates in both parties. the treasury would immediately have to cut and prioritize its spending. debt and interest payments would be made first. $500 billion is due in august alone. social security and medicare would be next on the

bob schieffer is our chief washington correspondent and the anchor of "face the nation." he joins me now. bob, what are the political realities that the president faces? >> well, he said he's going to have those troops home by september, so that means before the election. he plans to have this done. this is-- what he has done tonight, he's moving them out faster than the military wanted, but probably not as fast as most americans. a poll out today shows a majority of americans now want us to leave afghanistan. i think what shows the shift in priorities, though, is the sentence where the president said, "america, it is time to focus on nation building here at home." that shows we're moving the focus from there to here. >> pelley: he made a point of bringing up the killing of osama bin laden, and i wonder how much that fact has changed the political calculus here in washington. >> well, i think it has had a remarkable change. all of a sudden, you're seeing for the first time, a majority of americans saying it's time to do something different. it's time to start bringing the
