correspondent bob schieffer has more on what this means. >> there's no doubt about it. the big winner is the man who won. that is mitt romney. he not only won, but he sort of met expectations, got about 40% of the vote. i think that's what people thought he would have gotten. if he had gotten considerably less than that, there would have been a real question about whether he was able to put together enough to finally wind up with the nomination. but i think he's pretty much in the cat-bird seat now. he's won both the iowa caucuses and new hampshire. first time any republican other than the presidential candidate, an incumbent president, has been able to do that. the other big winner is jon huntsman. he was poll around 1% or 2%. he winds up in third place, pretty good finish for him. he said he would probably drop out if he didn't finish at least third. you cannot discount ron paul who winds up with 20-something percent of the vote or something close to that. you know, he continues to do that. i don't know many people, independent observers, who think he's going to get t

>> schieffer: i tell you one thing, scott. if romney wins tonight-- as every indication is that he will-- it won't be hard to figure out why. he dumped nearly $16 million worth of negative ads on newt gingrich. gingrich spent about $4 million. i mean, this thing has gotten so nasty down here that dave berry, the columnist in for the miami "herald" said today florida should have prepared for it like they prepare for a hurricane. but he said "instead of nailing plywood over your windows they should have nailed it on the front of their television sets." >> pelley: the candidates have gone at each other so hard. somebody in the newsroom today said the winner of the florida primary might be president obama. >> well, he hasn't won yet, but i'll tell you this, this is going to cost the republicans. an abc poll the other day said among independents nationally, mitt romney's favorability ratings have gone from the mid-40s down to 23%. so they're going to have some stuff to do to correct this. >> pelley: bob, thank you very much. stay w

defense secretary panetta told bob schieffer on "face the nation" the u.s. navy would do the same for anyone. >> we get a distress call, as we did in this case, even though it came from an iranian ship, when the pirates went after them, we respond to those calls. >> reporter: 15 pirates had captured the fishing vessel several weeks ago and were using it as a base of operations against other ships in the area. joint chiefs chairman dempsey said they gave up without a fight. >> it was an unopposed boarding in the face of the overwhelming combat power that was presented, the pirates made the right decision and surrendered. >> reporter: the somali pirates are being held aboard the "stennis" while the fishing vessel is back under iranian control. the iranian captain is quoted as thanking the navy. so far, no thank you notes from the iranian government. when last seen, the iranian crew was headed to port wearing u.s. navy ball caps. but given the state of relations between the u.s. and iran they should probably take them off before they go ashore. >> pelley: tip o

joining us now for some insight into all of this is bob schieffer, our chief washington correspondent and anchor at "face the nation." bob, you can't make too much of the results from one state. but what does it mean when you have two republicans who are so different in a dead heat? >> well, and don't forget you have ron paul in there, too, scott, because what you have here, you have mitt romney, who got about a quarter of the vote, that's what he keeps showing up in the national polls, but you have two conservatives who got about, you know, twice as many votes when you put the two of them together, that is coming from very conservative voters. still, coming out of iowa with the win, as mitt romney has done, i think he is feeling very good about his chances now. and the reason he is feeling that way is i don't think he thinks that ron paul is going to wind up getting the nomination, number one. he's just so far to the right of the mainstream of the republican party. and when you look at it here, romney has more money, he has better organization, he is the one that is in the best posit
