chief washington correspondent bob schieffer has more on yesterday's election results. >> well, mitt romney said we didn't win by much but we won by enough. that pretty much sums it up. if he had not won, it was a small victory. but let's say he lost by the same margin. he would have had to spend all of the next couple of days explaining why it was as a candidate with the most money with the best organization why it was that he lost in his home state. and there would have been questions. people would have asked look, if he can't win in michigan, where is he going to be able to win down the line. so it wasn't a big win, but it was a win. and winning is always better than losing. now the romney campaign can move on to some of these big states where he'll be contesting on super tuesday, like ohio, tennessee, georgia. you may see santorum do very well in ohio, which is one of the biggest prizes. newt gingrich is concentrating on georgia. but at least mitt romney can now put michigan behind him and move forward. i'm bob schieffer, cbs news, in new york. >>> well, in a surprising move, lon

>> schieffer: the first thing to say is our pollsters are telling us that romney may actually go over 50% or get pretty close to it. there's no other way you can characterize that but to say it's a landslide. so this is a big night for mitt romney. but i've got to tell you although voters say they hate negative ads this is another example about how negative ads work. mitt romney poured nearly $16 million worth of negative ads. romney and his super pac on newt gingrich. that worked against gingrich up there in iowa and it is certainly working here. he's a much better candidate, but the negative ads were a big part of it. >> pelley: the primaries are off to the races. there are seven more primaries to go throughout february. we will be watching every one of them for you. there is new research out tonight about breast cancer. a study in the journal of the american medical association found that some women have gone in for a second or even third surgery that may not have been necessary. we asked our reporter to look into this. >> the first year was the roughest. >> reporter: when donna ma

with us now is bob schieffer. or as we call him, chief. >> chief. >> face the nation correspondent. >> chief chief. >> did romney win this or did santorum lose it? >> you know, that is a very, very difficult question. i mean, when you think about was it the fact that romney was bragging about how many cadillacs his wife had and at the same time rick santorum is deciding to run against john kennedy in the speech he made back in 1960. i tell you, charlie, this is not going to be a chapter in the great profiles of really smart political strategy. i don't think. >> this is a divided party? >> it is a very divided party. the numbers really kind of told us that last night when you look at them. about 30% of the people who voted last night told us that the most important thing to them was who can beat barack obama. now, romney just crushed santorum, he got about 60-something percent of the vote there. you go a little further down to the people who said what is the most important thing to me, it is good strong character.
