this was bob schieffer's reaction to being put in that ad out of context. >> i have no connection withis was done without our permission. it comes as a total surprise to me. >> and nbc issued a statement on the use of david brooks off of "meet the press" saying nbc news and msnbc have not granted any campaign permission to use our news material as is our practice, we request the romney campaign refrain from using our material and mark halperin tweeted that to echo what tom brokaw said in january when his image and voice were used by the romney team, i'm extremely uncomfortable with the use of my personal image in this political ad. i do not want my role as a journalist compromised for political gain by any campaign. bottom line, does it work for them? >> it may work. by the way, my position on this is if i say it on your show and they use it, it's fair game. it's out in the public. you know, we can be a little bit thin-skinned sometimes, we journalists. at the same time, though, i think that the romney campaign has to acknowledge that it has a real problem here with this bain situation

which brings us to bob schieffer, chief washington correspondent and anchor of "face the nation".", by my count, we have about 102 days to the election. the economy is not helping the president. but governor romney has had some stumbles, too. >> reporter: well, yes, whatever governor romney's reasons, scott, for going to europe, i think it's fair to say he did not help himself by suggesting the british weren't ready to host the olympics. it's usually not a good idea to criticize your host when you're in a foreign country, and especially a country that has the tabloid press like great britain. but i have to tell you, i would bet that the president would trade a couple of bad stories in the london newspapers for some better economic numbers here at home. these numbers out today, as you've just been saying, are dizz ma. there is no other way to put it, and they're that way across the board. unemployment is stuck above 8%, and on and on. there's just not much there that any president could brag about, and the closer we get to the election, the more important the state of the economy be

gayle king is with me. >> hello, bob schieffer. many would say the word wimp and president don't go together in the same sentence and yesterday the governor was making news talking tough on iran in his speech yesterday. what do you think his strategy is there? >> well, i think he was in israel because he wanted to demonstrate his foreign policy credentials. he has known benjamin netanyahu for a long, long time. he wanted to show that -- that he's as popular in israel as it were as barack obama did, but, you know, starting off the speech, having -- starting off the visit, having to walk back what his chief foreign policy adviser had said about, you know, about israel and if it comes up that israel decides to bomb iran was not the best way to make a good impression. at least back here. but no question about it. he was trying to draw the line, and make people understand that, number one, he knows how to handle foreign policy and, number two, that basically without saying so, that he could just do it a lot better than barack obama is.

let's bring in chief washington correspondent and host of "face the nation," bob schieffer. bob, good morning. >> hey. >> so, jim messina said it will cost the election if this kind of fund-raising gap continues. is that simply fund-raising rhetoric or is that a real scare for the obama re-election effort? >> well, i think the obama people take this very seriously. i mean, money matters, and all you have to do is go back to the republican primaries to see an example of that. i mean, look, every time that an alternative to mitt romney, you know, sort of emerged during those primaries, romney, who had more money than all the other candidates, simply dumped a lot of negative advertising on him, and that alternative went away, just one after the other. i think, also, when you listen to what bill plante was just talking about, although obama is running behind in raising money, he's spending more money in these swing states, and in those swing states where he's running all these ads about romney and vulture capitalism and all that, obama has the lead. whether he can keep that or n
