i'm bob schieffer. hundreds-- by some estimates, more than a thousand-- are dead tonight in syria, and syrian rebels say they are victims of a poison gas attack that the syrian government launched on the suburbs of damascus. the government strongly denies it, but the pictures coming out of syria tonight tell a horror story even worse than what we've seen before from there-- victims young and old, dead, but with no marks on their bodies. the u.n. security council held an emergency meeting this afternoon, white house officials expressed concern, and the president is warned before that widespread use of chemical weapons would cross a red line. holly williams has our report, and we warn you some of it is difficult to watch. >> reporter: the videos show nightmarish scenes. rows of lifeless bodies, many of them small children. others appear to be dying. they are shown writhing in agony and in the grip of seizures. the syrian opposition claims this is the aftermath of a chemical attack on a residential neighbo

i'm bob schieffer. we are beginning tonight with the fires running wild in the west, because there are so many of them now and they are threatening hundreds of homes. right now, 19,000 firefighters are fighting 50 major fires in ten western states. in idaho alone, they burned more than 450 square miles, and with lightning in the forecast tonight, it could get worse. in california, a wildfire outside yosemite national park tripled in size overnight. it now covers more than 84 square miles. so far, firefighters have contained only 2% of it. teresa garcia is there. >> reporter: stands of cedar and pine exploded as the flames jumped from treetop to treetop, moving faster than the crew fighting them. u.s. forest service officer lee bentley. >> we've got a monster on our hands. this fire is making its own weather. it's going every which direction. this is one of the worst i've ever been on, and i've been doing it quite a few years. >> reporter: the fire threatens hotels, campgrounds and more than 2,500 struct

i'm bob schieffer. three young women were held captive for a decade in a dilapidated cleveland house where they were repeatedly raped and abused. but ariel castro, the man who pleaded guilty to the crime, said today it was everybody's fault but his and claimed the women were actually happy. judge michael russo was not convinced. he sentenced castro to life in prison without parole, plus 1,000 years. dean reynolds is at the courthouse. >> reporter: a shackled ariel castro scanned the courtroom today for a familiar face. there was at least one, michelle knight, one of the three women he imprisoned in his home fair decade of sexual and emotional brutality. she told the court and castro what it was like living in that house with its windows boarded up, trip alarms on the doors, the heavy chains, the pole they were tied to, and the dark. she shared it all with fellow captives amanda berry and gina dejesus. >> i cried every night. i was so alone. i worried about what would happen to me and the other girls eve

you said the other day it was a stab in the knack. >> yeah. >> schieffer: what should we do now? should we not go to that international economic conference in russia? should the president cancel the individual summit that he had planned with president putin? >> i would urge the president to cancel the bilateral summit he's having with mr. putin. president putin's behaving like a school yard bully, and in my experience, i've learned, unless you stand up to that bully, they ask for more and more and more, and he's always going out of his way, president putin is, to seem to poke up in the eye, whether it's in iran, syria, now with snowden pep so i would urge the president not to go forward with the bilateral meeting next month. that would give putin the kind of respect he doesn't deserve at this point in time. i would also urge the president to try to urge our allies, if it were possible, to move the g-20 summit away from st. petersburg. some of them may not want to do that. the g-20 summit's important, but certainly on our own end, for the president to meet with putin in a one-on-o

. >> schieffer: all right. congressman, you said a couple of weeks ago that you thought the n.s.a. surveillance program was creepy when the news first broke about the collection of phone numbers that they were putting together, and you said it went way beyond the scope, as you understood the patriot act. now, that we have this had new news about this threat and al qaeda plan something sort of an attack, do you still feel that way? >> no, i do think we need to reauthorize and reform this program. a lot of us have learned much, much more about it since it was revealed. the intelligence committee and the judiciary committee are moving forward with reforms of this program. we do have to do more, i believe, to protect our liberties without sacrificing our national security, and i think that can be done. there was a vote to defund the entire program. i didn't support that vote because i think the smarter way to go about it is rewrite the law that authorizes this, gorches, and that's exactly what our intelligence community is doing, reform this program to protect our liberties while makin
