tonight we have the latest details on the search for debra schmitt. plus we talk to one of her students who is hoping for her safe return. a deadly end to a police chase in oakland, after police shoot and killed a suspect. the chase ended with a horrible crash in oakland this afternoon in the end, one suspect was killed. one of the problems -- problems for police officers, the police radio system went down. kron 4's jonathan bloom shows us how the chase unfolded. >>> the chase started after they came to investigate a call. two men, shooting at random people in a neighborhood that has never been a crime hot spot. when police showed up the -- the suspects didn't stick around. here is where it started. investigators found multiple bullet casing. >> we had a woman, two individuals walking and other peoplal on the sidewalk. >> the bullets missed all of them. they fled towards the free way. police tried to call dispatch but the radio wasn't working. >> the radio will sometimes go down. we have a difficult time communicating. we have no contact with the disp

schmitt's cousin also tells us there was a lot going on in her life. she had several close family members pass away unexpectantly and was going through a divorce. her cousin said schmitt had been vague about details in their recent emails. however, the last one, last wednesday about two hours before she disappeared said simply quote still at home, will give you a call, love debbie. family members are trying to remember conversations. some believe show may have volunteered in a soup kitchen. >> my heart of hearts, i want to believe that. why do i say that, because we talked many times about her if she was -- if she could take some time off for a sabbatical. >> reporter: there's some talk search efforts will be in san francisco today. i asked the ser jnt about that. a friend had talked about a conversation, but not sure how extensive that search would be. when they were here in marin county they were using k9's to track her scent. it would be a different search. we'll try to continue to get acold of the police. reporting for ktvu, channel 2 news. >>> we'

the area is close to schmitt's home. they showed up to check her house and talk to neighbors about the 53-year-old teacher. schmitt was reported missing to the police thursday when she didn't show up to teach in san rafael, and her husband returned home from a trip to find her missing. but the marin county rescue crews were called later. >> i was really disturbed and was concerned as to why they were not looking until today. that was my first thought. and i have been very worried about her. she seemed loss, she knows the area. we want to know what may have happened to her. >> reporter: and i spoke to a ross spokesperson about 3:45 about why the search began six days after schmitt went missing. and he said the case didn't meet the needs for the rescue crews to be called in. he didn't specify what that need was, but he said yesterday it merited calling in a search and rescue team. now the team will wrap up in about 45 minutes just as the sun goes down. they say it is not clear whether they will return to phoenix lake. they

. >> reporter: julia that is right, moments ago the search for this woman, deborah schmitt began wrapping up here in marin county. and what surprised the number of people was that the search for her began today when she was reported missing six days ago. now we want to show you pictures taken earlier this evening, just about an hour ago from news chopper two about an hour ago above phoenix lake, which is close to this area. we were there this afternoon as a team of about 30 searchers began to look through 100 of acres in the lake, an area schmitt was known to frequent. the 53-year-old woman was reported missing last week when her husband returned home from a trip. and she didn't return to school. she left a thank you message on the board, and the keys on her desk. her id credit cards were all found in her house. a ross spokesperson said that the case didn't meet the need for the search to be called out last thursday. but they said new leads developed yesterday merited calling in a search and rescue crew today. >> well this is a very difficult search, because we're basically up here on a p

i just called debbie schmitt again within the past several minutes. i wanted to talk to her about the last e-mail she got from debbie the day debbie disappeared. that e-mail came across 2:25 our time. her cousin lives on the east coast. that e-mail said and i quote "still at home, i'll give you a call, love debbie." that was a couple hours before she disappeared. her cousin telling me this morning her heart is just so confused. and really a lot of people are confused at this point trying to figure out what happened to this teacher. searchers combed an area called phoenix lake yesterday where she likes to hike but came up empty. she's a teacher and mother of an eighth grade son. she's in the process of getting a divorce. her cousin says she's been married about 14 years. she's had a tough past several months with several close family members passing away. her cousin says she handled it all with her usual optimism and that makes her disappearance even more confusing. >> when i spoke with her she seemed very strong and optimistic. when we talked on our e
