bonnie schneider thank you.abama, was hit especially hard. tens of thousands of people there still in the dark. on the phone is john kilcullen, director of emergency management there. good morning. glad you're with us. as the sun comes up, what is the main challenge as you try to clean up? >> our main is power restoration, recent update we have about 7,300 customers that are currently out of power, that's down from a high of about 23,000 last night so there's been progress in that area. debris removal, there's a lot of storm debris that will need to be cleaned up that's blocking some roads and then we will continue with our damage assessment, and then provide whatever assistance we can do with businesses and homeowners that are doing emergency repairs to damaged structured. >> do you have any idea of how many people are out of a home? have you been able to do any surveys yet? >> you know, damage to some residences is extensive in some portions of the city. we did have one shelter available, only about four peopl

let's go now to meteorologist bonnie schneider. bonnie, it is a mess out there. >> it is, victor and unfortunately, while one storm exits another one comes in. this one is bringing freezing rain to the mid south. the same region that sought heavy snow on christmas day, we're watching for the freezing rain to continue throughout the afternoon, you can see some heavy rain in louisiana. we actually have some thunderstorms rolling through and that's also impacting mississippi as well. but it's really the freezing rain i'm most concerned with. as the water hits any area if we zoom in, the temperatures are teetering right around the freezing mark so it's definitely cold across little rock and oklahoma city. in the northeast, cold air has filtered in behind the exiting system so now we have temperatures right below freezing in new york city. let's look at the storm system as it works its way across the east for the weekend. this is going to be a big snowmaker for areas into ohio on top of what we've already seen and we're watching as we g

[applause] dr. hansen, welcome back. it's been two years since you were here. i'd like to begin with hurricane sandy. you are a teacher at columbia, you live in manhattan, where were you when sandy was approaching and when sandy hit new york? >> i was on our farm in kintnersville, pennsylvania, where we ended up losing power for better part of the week, and four big trees blown over, the railings blown off our deck and windows blown out of the barn. so even in pennsylvania, which is separated from the atlantic ocean by new jersey, we still -- >> thanks, new jersey. >> new jersey didn't do much to buffer it. but that's where i was. and we -- you know, the lights went out and we heard these noises on the second floor as the -- as these railings were getting blown out. it was a -- a -- little, i don't know, just an interesting experience. >> your first -- first biggest st

let's get to meteorologist bonnie schneider who's tracking the system in atlanta. good morning, bonnie. >> good morning, ali. right now we're seeing heavy rain across the new york city metropolitan area and that is impacting travel at this hour. this just in. we have one-hour delays at la guardia in queens. even though the rain isn't as strong in that region, we're getting fierce wind. look at the heavy rain hitting providence and boston and to the north it's all snow. check out the snowfall totals from this storm. almost two feet in illinois. many cities shattered records. we had a record in little rock, arkansas, on christmas day. never in 86 years have they seen so much snow on christmas. the temperatures are brutally cold. ines in syracuse, new york, it was 20 years. the colder air will filter in and temperatures will plummet down across much of the regions you see here. wind and rain impacting airports. likely to see more delays in philadelphia and washington, and heavy accumulation, a foot or more, all the way across new england. so this is going to impact ve

bonnie schneider joins us now. hopefully, bonnie, most people, well, most people are where they expected to be this christmas day. >> i hope so. because if they're traveling across the south, dangerous weather is erupting rights now. we have a tornado watch that's in effect until 1:00 p.m. central time for much of southern louisiana. this includes baton rouge, hammond, new orleans,i nickel-sized hail across texas. look at the frequent lightning hammering the dallas area right now. you're seeing that sweeping across mississippi and into jackson and this is a very dangerous situation for travel, not just in terms of damages areas where we're having strong wind but we could likely see tornados. the area in orange indicates a moderate risk for tornados. what does that mean? it means that we have a 30 to 60% escalated risk in this region right here for severe weather to break out for today. so the weather is likely to get worse as we go through the afternoon when we're talking about the threat of severe thunderstorms. i

our bonnie schneider is tracking the storm this morning. good morning.at alexandra steele was saying they haven't received snow in that area so drivers aren't used to having it on the roads. >> not on christmas day. that's what's unusual. snow before in this region this time of year, but to have it start on christmas day and continue through christmas night, hasn't happened in some parts of this region for 80 years. it's much more difficult to drive in freezing rain because as soon as that moisture hits any surface it ices over and driving on snow versus ice, more tracks on snowy roads. east of oklahoma city ice will accumulate and then eventually that wintry mix will change over to all snow and it will pile up in terms of heavy accumulation in terms of arkansas and oklahoma later on tonight and as we get into tomorrow, look what's ahead. we could see up to a foot of snow in parts of kentucky. the storm system advances east. on top of that to the south we're looking at dangerous severe weather with lightning strikes popping up from texas all the way into

stephen schneider was a who was involved in the formation of climate one that[applause] sandy. new york? to place it in a modern context, we have to turn to proxy data like coral and ice to piece together the puzzle of how the climate buried in the distant past. it showed it was relatively warm. it was about a thousand years ago. recently that exceeded anything we have seen. it was featured in the summary for policy makers in 2001. when it became an icon, those who find the science inconvenient saw the need to try to discredit this graph. they saw discrediting me as a way to do that. some have been attacked for the work they have done. i was also bill of five. my book tells the story of what it is like to be a scientist and find yourself in voluntary and accidental public figure. i was put in the limelight in limelight. [laughter] stick metaphor -- >> yes. that, if we as scientists are talking to the right people. reflag that we would not tell you but for fear that you might >> you are relatively new todid you know what you're getting a career in atmospheric change? having stud

having studied under steven schneider and experiencing it, and others, i was prepared for the public scrutiny. we did a study on climate change and the proportionate of scientists who agree with it. 98%. i was certainly not prepared for the personal nature and ec of the backlash. >> what happened -- and the immediacy of a backlash. >> what happened? what were the consequences? >> our study did two things. there was an incredibly high agreement behind what they have articulated as the main component about climate change. the second was that those were published in doubting and expressing their lack of agreement essentially were not very well qualified. the vast majority of them did not publish in science literature. they had not studied in science. .he backlash was immediatel the blogger sphere -- the blogosphere was amplified. it was not very friendly. >> when people poster picture and your e-mail address and encourage others to send you nasty e mills, i have -- nasty e-mails, i have had over two hundred messages from people i did not know in a single morning. they were from unpleasa

schneider. i lived in chicago from 1984 until 1988. i used to take the train from chicago to springfield. my parents would pick me up. i did not have a car when i lived in springfield. when we talk about high-speed rail, we talk about maximum speed at some point on the track would be 110 miles per hour. the question i have is the average speed and time savings going different distances, for example, from chicago to springfield. we had a couple of stops in suburban chicago. i think joliet'. secretary hammond, -- i will ask you about this to. these investments can cost us a lot of money. when you talk about average speed and you start excluding communities that will have access to the train, if you go from chicago to st. louis, you are going to have a high-speed train. i get that. but in my view to be true high speed, you will have to exclude a bunch in the middle and have separate service for that. would it be worth the cost to get the average speed up, i mean to get the top speed up to a certain level? the ability average speed and the

governor schneider -- not schneider. in the state of michigan, are working on high speed corridor between chicago and detroit. right now there is 80 miles out that corridor that is currently at 110 miles per hour between indiana and kalamazoo, michigan. there's a lot of work to be done in the chicago area to help facilitate faster speeds to all of our corridors. so i think we do have a record of success and we're building on that record of success. we're doing this intimately. we are doing in a way that we have planned and makes sense to make sure that when we do deliver the service that it is something that people are going to appreciate and to demand. >> thank you. we will make sure to describe not only as a train to somewhere, but that some work happens to be in the 21st century. so thank you very much. as i close your i would just urge ms. fleming, and i don't know whether this is true or not, but as i read through your testimony, it occurred to me that just in terms of figuring out some of the modeling i don't know

[laughter] he called a meeting of entire people in the building, you know, more than 100 people coming to -- and he really gave it to steve. and the great -- and the really impressive thing about steve was, you know, he didn't back down. so he -- even at that time, when he's just as around 26 or 27-year-old postdoc, he had the courage to stand up for what he believed in. so he was really a good example of courage of a scientist at a very early age.
