of instances in our resolutions it's also been about ensuring that there was a community school leader committee on campus to help deal with some of these issues, to do things like peer to peer orientation because, for example, we know sexual harassment and sexual violence happens most frequently in the early days of the school year during things like orientation week. and it's also about ensuring that we realize the school day doesn't just end at 3:00. extra can urricular activities, partnerships between local law enforcement. >> tom, back to the question i posed about a federal definition, do you even have consistency within federal agencies of a definition as you partner with various agencies? >> well, our biggest partner is the department of education. we've done a number of cases together and we really start with the stools that we have which is title 9, title 6, and we have, those laws do have definition. so we work off those common definitions. and we have done, we have been able to do a lot more work in the lgbt context. ruslyn is correct, if you look under title 9 you won't see the words sexual orientation or gender identity but you will see sexual discrimination. there is a pr

every classroom, every school environment should be a safe environment where everyone is welcomed regardless of who you are, regardless of your ethnic background, sexual orientation or cultural background and we don't couple that with behaviors that kids will display. and the other thing in terms of context that i want to make sure is clear and i didn't am happy you're here and we are fighting a battle against pop culture and the messages they receive on tv, logging on to the facebook page, logging on to all of the social media that is out there, think how many times in pop culture they refer to someone as "their little b, or little n" and that's just the way we greet each other and for someone that entered school only speaking spanish and you think about the language issues and in spanish i can tell you a whole bunch of terms that people use to great each other that are so racist, homo phobic and have a length and accepted as accepted and we need to work together and we're dealing with a culture we are trying to shift and in san francisco we are proud of the work around the issue of tolerance but we look at it as prevention. we don't want to be responding to iss

of high school in the reaganer a. that is actually my impression of conservatism and dealing with tax west a strong defense, dealing with family orientedand social policies. this is not anti-defense this is just anti-waste, there are areas of waste that we need to focus in on. the president is trying to solve the fiscal cliff, we are trying to solve the debt and the deficit. jenna: you have a fresh look at things. what do you think the leadership that exists now that is negotiating this that may be more entrenched in politics than you have been, what kind of advice would you give them. >> we are able to say to leadership and the leadership is able to listen from their own constituents instead, i'm from central oklahoma. the key thing that comes up over and over again is we have to deal with the debt and deficit. we hear the noise of that maybe closer to the ground and that is a good thing to be able to share. when you've got a trillion dollars of over spending we've got to deal with a trillion dollars of over spending. jenna: you came in fresh in 2010, you signed up for a second turn at this. >> there are a few things left to lee solve

school years in denver, colorado, where -- when he became an activist. he was born on august 29, 1936 worcester, massachusetts and then to denver where howard spent most of his upbringing. as he talked about his sexual orientation and the fact that he was gay, youx:jr,i know, he sais aware being gay in the second grade. it gave me a strong empathy with other underdogs that stuck with me all of my life. howard was actually a junior in high school when he joined the local chapters of the naacp and he diagram onstraitd -- demonstrated leadership skills, managing the campaign of the first african-american candidate for the denver school board in 1955, working for the successful passage of colorado's fair employment law land serving on naacp denver and colorado boards. in the mid-50's his father threatened to cut off his college tuition if he did not end his political involvement. as howard remembered it my dad put a couple of checks on the dining room table. the checks for the next year's tuition and said get out of activism and you can have those checks. and this is what howard did. i tore them up in his face, and that was the end of my college education, and it was at that time that howard became a labor activist
