our dave schratwieser has more and joins us live at philadelphia police headquarters tonight. dave?> reporter: iain, the mayor and the police commissioner have been trying to come up with something to deal with the gun violence in philadelphia over 1200 shootings last year. they've now decided to attack the problem head on with that new gun task force aimed at the most violent offenders and illegal gun sales. >> with over 300 murders in 1200 shootings last year there's no question gun violence is a problem that needs to be addressed. now philadelphia police are hoping a new gun violence task force could be part of the solution. >> we got to get these guys that have guns are inclined to use them off the street. >> reporter: police are already using intelligence information to identify suspec suspects, gang members and violent criminals. district attorney and the courts are expected to join an initiative that will target illegal guns and the criminals who use them. >> this gun task force will allow us to be laser like in our focus and targeting the most prolific offenders. >> reporter

fox 29's dave schratwieser is live on the parkway. dave?> reporter: lucy, these two tragic incidents occurred within hours of each other tonight the delaware state police and philadelphia police are awaiting the results of autopsies to determine the causes of death. they're trying determine if this may have also been related to the cold weather. with temperatures well below freezing tuesday, delaware state police made a startling discovery in the parking lot at this wawa on dupont highway in new castle. a 49-year-old woman dead inside her suv. >> that's really sad. >> reporter: state police say the woman was unresponsive inside a ford explorer parked here just before 7:30. as customers came and went, gassing up their cars and grabbing hot coffee, attempts to revive the woman failed. police do not know how long the woman was here. >> we need to make sure that everybody is taken care of. i think that's probably the reason why. >> reporter: police say there was no foul play involved and they won't be sure of the cause of death until the medica

fox 29's dave schratwieser joining us live from southampton, new jersey, with this story. dave?> reporter: dawn, this fire was not only devastating to one family but a second family as well. tonight the good news, lots of people rallying around them to help them out. >> the response from the community has just been overwhelming. >> reporter: for tabernacle volunteer firefighter jason penn well and his family it's been a week to remember. first they lost the home where they lived in a fire. then an entire community stepped up to help them out. >> they've all pitched in to help a family they have never met. >> reporter: jason was at the firehouse this week when he heard a call come in about a fire on north fire lane road in southampton where he lives. he and several firefighters head headed over only to learn over the radio it was jason's home that was on fire. >> as soon as he started describing it i knew, okay, you know, this is my house. then he gave the house number. >> reporter: jason frantically searched for his children when he arrived at the fire scene. they were due home
