to schumer. we don't know if schumer is going to accept it. we don't know if this changes the calculation at all. but we do know that republicans were planning to block this vote that was expected to take place. now, geoff, we knew something was afoot when a last-minute scheduled democratic caucus meeting was supposed to take place behind closed doors at 1:00 today, and then about ten minutes before it was to start, it was canceled. and so that was an indication that there were perhaps some negotiations and conversations happening between the two leaders. now, this is something that has come to the brink. this is the most dire of a standoff that i've seen in a really long time up here on capitol hill. especially because, you know, leader mcconnell wasn't asking for anything as far as passing this debt limit. but he was trying to tell democrats how to do it. and that is pretty extraordinary within itself. and this is something schumer just would not accept. of course there are political consequenc

this is not unusual for chuck schumer to lay into republicans.r the debt ceiling for months, and then ultimately they were able to get a deal, just a punt for two months, extending the debt ceiling until early december, and only after 11 republicans agreed to break a republican led filibuster after an intensive effort by the republican leaders to get enough to do just that, and schumer made clear where he stands. what's different this time is that this was a full senate. typically when the senate majority leader was making his speech in the morning, tit's an empty senate. at that moment, all hundred senators, who were in attendance, 98 senators who were there, sitting there listening to chuck schumer give that speech and directed very pointedly at the republicans and that's why when i talked to a number of them afterwards, they called it classless, according to mike rounds, one of the 11 to vote for it, as well as john thune, the number two senate republicans, and warned he would not cooperate in the future, we'll see if that happens. nevertheles

chuck schumer emphatically refused. and it turned out to be a stare-down and mcconnell ultimately blinked and said he doesn't want an economic calamity out of this and doesn't want the country to default and he will provide ten republican votes for the short term solution. only two months. one key consideration here from mitch mcconnell was the fear that democrats would make changes to the filibuster, it would pierce the filibuster, at least create a carve-out for the purposes of the thing, the debt ceiling, it came down to a situation where the two hold-out democrats who support the fill bester, senator joe manchin and senator kyrsten sinema could be put in a situation of either save the economy and save the filibuster and mcconnell decided, according to numerous senators i spoke to he did not want to put them in that position. this is just a band-aid. this problem will have to be addressed again in december, and that december 3rd deadline could slide a little bit. one senator i talked to thinks it could slide to janua

and certainly for chuck schumer, holding on to joe manchin as a member of the democratic party has to be part of that urgency. >> well absolutely lawrence. and i think that the leadership of the democratic party needs to keep their eye on the policy ball. at the american people voted for. and we don't -- i don't even know that it's been mentioned in the segment yet, we're in a pandemic so many of these policies that yes cost money but are paid for, the way the bill is set up, are for a particular reason. it's to allow reason women to get back to work, so that they have affordable childcare to do that. it's to invest into home care, and elder care, and paid family leave. and that's things people need in this moment, but they also needed this before the pandemic. so now the democrats it's not just the urgency of, the midterm elections, but the fact that the american people need this stuff. and they voted for it. so i think that joe manchin, every night that he goes to bed, he needs to think about that mom that's at home, that's not able to go back to work because they can't afford child

chuck schumer knows the history of democratic senators in republican states switching parties, and so since he became the majority leader of the 50/50 senate he has to have devoted some thought every day to keeping joe manchin in the democratic party. publicly joe manchin has always said that he hasn't given a thought to leaving the democratic party, but david corn reports today in "mother jones," quote, in recent days, senator joe manchin has told associates that he is considering leaving the democratic party if president biden and democrats on capitol hill do not agree to his demand to cut the size of the social infrastructure bill from $3.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion. according to people who have heard manchin discuss this, man chin has said that if this were to happen, he would declare himself an american independent, and he has devised a detailed exit strategy for his departure. manchin has discussed bolting from the democratic party, perhaps to place pressure on biden and democrats in these negotiations. he told associates that he has a two-step plan for exiting the party. first

senator chuck schumer, the majority leader said, absolutely not. it's not going to happen. and ultimately, senate republican leader mitch mcconnell decided that he would acquiesce to a two-month extension. this past with -- it passed very narrowly, just 61 votes in the senate, 11 republicans. only one more than the bare minimum that's needed to break a filibuster. and it indicates the difficulty of ultimately getting this passed again in december. this happened with a bunch of criticism from republicans toward mitch mcconnell, which is rare to see. they don't often do that, about his decision to cut a deal here and move forward. there are some, like senator ted cruz, who said they believe that schumer and democrats were going to surrender if this didn't happen. mcconnell ultimately decided it was probably a bit too risky a bet to make, as the u.s. hurdled closer and closer to that october 18th cliff with markets getting spooked more and more. we'll see how this pans out. there was a lot of tension in the senate, and the fact that it was this difficult to get a two-month ext
