nbc 10 first chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the faen and the forecast. >> we're starting off on the cool side, but we're going to warm up this week. we've got a lot of clouds moving in from the north, and that's going to prevent the temperature from going up a whole lot more than we already are seeing. 57 degrees in philadelphia. only 52 in allentown. 54 in trenton and mt. holly. even 58 degrees in georgetown delaware, and atlantic city for the warm spots. you can see these clouds moving down from north to south, so it's going to be a pretty cloudy afternoon, and we do expect at least some little spotty showers to develop. we're dry so far, but we'll keep an eye on the radar because a lot of computer models are showing just some of these small showers developing and moving across the area during the afternoon. so even if you get hit by one it won't last long won't be that heavy, and then it's going to dry out and you may be enjoying some pretty nice weather after today. but today it's pretty cloudy breezy some spotty showers especially in the early to mid

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with the forecast. what a wet start to the week glenn. >> a very wet start. we have a break now from the heavy rain not from the low clouds and the fog. as we get some sunshine this afternoon, that is going to allow the temperatures to go up and the threat for severe storms to go up. that's why we have a first alert issued for late today and this evening for the potential for severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, large hail and possibly even a couple of tornadoes in the area. you can see the heavy rain moving out very fast. of course, we still have a lot of low clouds around. more rain back to the west, as you can see there. not that much yet, but we have to wait for the sun to help trigger some of these storms. the highest threat of severe storms later today goes all the way from north carolina up toward the philadelphia area and again it includes many of our counties in pennsylvania and new jersey and all of delaware. the future cast shows this rain again moving now, just patchy areas of some driz

first alert meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz with a look at storms. dramatic jump in temperatures can help fuel those storms? >> if we stay in this cool air mass we wouldn't have any thunderstorm threat for tomorrow but we are definitely going to be getting warmer and it's just a question about how warmer we'll get and the greater the chance of severe thunderstorms and specifically late in the afternoon with these thunderstorms and they're not going to last very long and it will be pretty strong and potentially damaging winds and hail, as well. right now, things are relatively quiet and it's cloudy and chilly and a few drizzle drops that the radar is detecting and severe thunderstorms are now in eastern ohio. that's the first round as that comes in later tonight. we'll be seeing some showers and the strong stuff and you can see the remnants of these ohio storms just starting to come into the area and not nearly as strong once they get here and we do expect to be wet overnight and when you get up tomorrow morning and that's just the beginning of a wild

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now. glenn, you're tracking a cool down? >> right those winds are coming in off the ocean. the flag's blowing from a different direction. and so yeah it's going to be cooler tomorrow than it is today. we also have some isolated showers and thunderstorms around. most of you are not going it be getting wet tonight. in comeumberland and salem county not only a couple showers but even thunderstorms. since they're not moving very much you can get some isolated flooding. now, they tend to develop toward new castle county in delaware. they're not moving that much. they're kind of redeveloping there. the future cast shows those showers over the next couple of hours, and then they fall apart. we're left with clouds for much of the rest of the night. but not much in the way of rain. it's down to 65 degrees after hitting a high of 72 today. and that's a sign that temperature on its way down. let you know how much cooler it's going to be and if it's going to warm up for the weekend with the seven day

nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us with the forecast. in for another night with near freezing low temperatures. >> yeah and a lot of places going below freezing tonight. and that's why we have freeze warnings. we have mostly clear skies. at least we have more sunshine during the day today than we had yesterday. did not feel quite as cold. but the temperatures going down as the wind goes down, and freeze warning in effect from 2:00 to 8:00 a.m. for much of the area. and that is not all of it. we have frost advisories for the rest of the area because those places may not actually get to 32 at the instrument level, but the cold air can sink all the way to the ground, and you can still get some frost there. so you want to bring in the tender vegetation throughout the area pretty much tonight. temperatures pretty uniform now because of the gusty winds. and boy, they are gusty up over 30 miles an hour. still, and we have temperatures going down tonight. 28 in allentown, redding, quakertown doylestown 30 in norristown. we'll show you the rest o

chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joining us now. >> that third straight day of cloudy skies, we still have them in the philadelphia area right now. that's helped to keep the temperature down 56 degrees. still way warmer than the last couple of days. up to 60 in mt. holly. mid-60s in south jersey and delaware. farther to the south is where the really warm air was. in the 80s. not that far away. pretty close to 80 in extreme southern delaware. and so what happens is with the cold damp air that's been over us, it's more dense than the warm air that's been trying to come up from the south. makes it harder to move out even though the winds turn into the south. but that also cuts the thunderstorm chances. and you'll see the results of this. you saw the temperatures in the 80s. look at these storms down in virginia coming through richmond and right toward that area that was in the 80s right now. the clouds keeping it basically dry. and warmer weather on the way. sunny weather on the way. i'll see how long that lasts with the seven day in a few minutes. >> all right, glenn. you can

chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here with a closer look. this wet weather just the beginning. on top of that it's going to get much colder? >> yeah renee, it's already starting to get colder. it was up near 70 degrees. now we're down in the 50s in parts of the area. the wind has shifted a bit. now the northeast wind is in and the temperatures are going down and the rain is falling down too. we have some in new jersey. we have some in pennsylvania. some in maryland about to move into delaware. you can see a steadier rain across the lehigh valley and the poconos. we have some down through the philadelphia area. generally on light to moderate side. and more consistent rain in south jersey. look at these temperatures. they've really dropped. it was 69 in philadelphia. now it's 58. now it's down to 50 in mt. holly. they were 71 degrees a couple of hours ago. this cold air coming down from the northeast called a back door cold front and, boy, is it coming in here. boy, you're going to continue to feel it. scattered showers through the evening, ju

. >> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. we have changes coming in the next 24 hours from cold and damp to warm and stormy. a damp night tonight, wetter than what we saw during the day today and much warmer weather friday and how much warmer? 30 plus degrees the first alert for friday afternoon, though as that warm air comes in. and that first alert is for potentially severe thunderstorms that come later in the day with some damaging winds in some parts of the area and a lot of wind in the atmosphere coming out of here and hail and heavy rain are brief possibilities, so the heavy rain threat and not all that high and a higher threat of lightning and high winds and the moderate threat of hail and a very very small threat if any, tornadoes in the area and we'll keep you updated with that and the temperatures are very uniform in the low 40s as the east wind continues and until that direction changes it's going to stay in the 40s. nothing much on radar nearby. we've got some severe thunderstorms coming by for western pennsylvani
