nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here with the forecast. but it's not always going to be that way the entire week right, glenn sfl. >> absolutely not. the second half of the week will be drastically different. we have different conditions across the area right now and it's going to be like that for the rest of the day. this is live shot of cape may. totally overcast low clouds very cool. look at these clouds moving in from the northeast. so trenton now is socked in with the clouds and only 68 degrees while it's in the 80s in philadelphia. we had a couple little showers starting to develop. there's more activity to the west so it's more of what's going to develop this afternoon than what is going to move in. let's look at this 86 degrees in philadelphia here. 69 in trenton. 74 on mt. pocono. we're in the 80s across much of delaware as well. but with that east wind with those clouds coming in the temperature may very well be dropping across much of the area as we go into the afternoon with isolated and scattered showers and storms developing

and we will talk to glenn hurricane schwartz. and are we in the clear, glenn? the humidity overall, and in the last few days, it adds up to baseball weather, and this evening and even tomorrow, it is going to be good baseball weather, and the humidity is going to be starting up and it is 78 in philadelphia and trenton and the only showers we have seen in the southwest corner of delaware and the thing is that it is relatively unpopulated rural area, because the radar estimate getting up close to 5 inches of rain there and in just a few hours' time and it is an investication of just how much moisture can be around and concentrated in one spot like toms river and seaside heights area. and nothing like that this evening as the temperatures are dropping into the 70s. we have thunderstorms in the forecast, and parts of it before the weekend is over. and bigger rains next week in the seven-day, we will tell you more about it. >>> and the speed and the excitement of nascar returns to dover, delaware. >> and the the race is a start of a busy summer, with races all over

. >>> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> well take a look at this from skyforce 10. look at the rain shafts coming down. we've got some really heavy rain in parts of the area. other parts of the area are sees sunshine and are not going to get a drop of rain. but there are some out there. there's some lightning. not as much as yesterday. and there aren't nearly as many storms in total as yesterday. but if you're stuck under one of those things you don't care about the rest of the area that is not getting rained on. we are tracking those thunderstorms right now. we continue to see warm weather. unseasonably warm weather. and we've got some weekend storms in the forecast. lot more activity than what we're seeing right now. we have clouds in and around the bala cynwyd area and philadelphia. 88 degrees. overcast at the airport. winds west-southwest at 11 miles an hour. and the shower that went through philadelphia just missed the airport so they're still up to 88 degrees. other areas in the mid 80s. even 86 in allentown. and where the

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back now, and soggy behind us too isn't it? >> it is. glenn, we're hoping for improvements as we head into the holiday weekend that the raindrops will be gone. >> yes absolutely. it's not going to be anything like this. even by tomorrow morning. things are going to change dramatically. the rain just about ending here in philadelphia area. and it continues through all of delaware. the entire southern half of new jersey. most of it is on the light side. we had a couple of pockets of moderate to heavier rain. here's one right around atlantic city right now. good thing it's happening now. and not on memorial day weekend. you can see the back edge of this continues to move to the east. so it is on its way out. but just slowly. and remember we needed this rain for the last 30 days up until today. we've had less than a half inch. nearly 3 inches below average. so far today in philly just a little over a tenth. not exactly a lot of rain. here it is. the future cast hour by hour. and you can see it ending in delaware first the

nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here now with impact of weather condition on fires like this. >> glenn you've been saying we really need the rain. here's the proof huh? >> we go 16 straight days without any rain and that ground is really, really dry, and so it's easy for fires to start. just takes a small ember. you'll also notice the smoke pretty much going straight up. there is very little wind in the surrounding areas. what ted was talking about as far as the fire being blown in different directions when you get fires, they kind of create their own little microclimate because winds are created by temperature differences. so right in the middle of the fire obviously it's hotter than surrounding air so that creates its own breeze and so you can get winds going in different directions at least for a short area and make it real difficult for firefighters to deal with because if you have a prevailing wind in one particular direction, the smoke is blowing all in that same direction. >> all right, glenn, thank you for that. skyforce 10 will stay over this scene. c

nbc 10's first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here to talk about a red flag warning in effect. >> that's right, chris. sometimes when you get dry weather for too many days you build up these danger for fires and a red flag warning issued by the national weather service from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. today for all of the southeastern pennsylvania and just about all of new jersey. what it means is that there is an enhanced fire danger across those areas, doesn't take much to create the fire and spread the fire. very dry ground because of 12 straight dry days plus the gusty winds. add to that danger. it can spread any fire more quickly. by this afternoon we've got a southwest wind gusts over 20 miles an hour. as you can see by 8:00 p.m. perhaps even stronger so that's the combination that creates that fire danger. it's already up to 78 degrees in allentown allentown. 76 in philadelphia. again, the dry ground helps that temperature to go up too. 80 degrees atlantic city international. maybe a sea breeze coming in but it's going to take a little while. for today by n

. >> glenn "hurricane" schwartz is here to tell us. >> yeah absolutely. that's a fairly significant area of rain moving into some cool air too. down in the 60s today after 80s last two days and it has been pretty windy too. gusts over 20 miles an hour. there is nothing on radar now, but that large area of rain back in the midwest is moving straight in our direction. and at least from the philadelphia area southward, we have got a good chance of getting some of that. we need some of that in the last 30 days, less than half an inch of rain nearly three inches of rain below average. let's see how far north this gets. at least by tomorrow morning, delaware, extreme south jersey you're definitely going to get rain going and it is even going to be cold down there. temperatures may not get out of the 50s. we'll talk more about the chances for rain in the philadelphia area not only with this system but with another front that could affect the memorial day weekend. that's coming in just a few minutes. >> glenn, speaking of that holiday weekend, as it gets closer,

first alert chief meteorologist glenn "the hurricane" schwartz is joining me now, here to talk aboute wind that might be a factor. >> the wind is strong. we have been showing you all afternoon the wind is blowing out of the west, gusting over 30 miles per hourment that's going to continue to blow the smoke. remember, the last fires we have had, there was very little wind at all. the smoke was going straight up. in this case the weatherly wind is strong. it will be diminishing over the next few hours. it's been 20 miles per hour, gusting to over 30. it will be much less of a wind than what we are seeing now. >> as we watch the flames firefighters pour water on this facility which has been in the area more than a hundred years. again, we watch the peck temperatures live. we first those noticed it from traffic camera ares. the smoke rising into the year and flames pouring out of the sunoco plant in philadelphia. we'll continue to make calls and bring updates as we get more information. employers hired 27,000 jobs to the payroll. 10,000 construction positions. however pen pen's unemploym

. >> let's turn to nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. glenn, where are these storms right now? >> well they're basically in delaware and south jersey. and in one case ocean county. it's in the same spot it's been in for hours. everywhere else it's moving around. here's delaware. this is the southern portion of new castle county right near smyrna and just north of dover. you can see that is crossing delaware bay toward bridgeton. now one shower moved through the philadelphia area then through evesham township and now is moving right over tabernacle. as you can see, a little bit of lightning with that over medford lakes right now. but the area that's been the most active right near seaside heights in ocean county. look at all the lightning there, and we had a bit of a lull then the thing just exploded right over the same spot. so they're probably getting some flooding in that area along with all that lightning. the rest of the area generally quieting down as we go through the next several hours. drying out and the humidity dropping. but it

let's get to nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz tracking these heavy downpours. glenn, you heard ted say, 4 inches of rain. that's a lot in a short period of time. >> yeah we've been tracking this all afternoon and telling withdrew this was the one danger area. this is very isolated. the rest of the jersey shore for the most part is doing just fine south of long beach island. but the area that's gotten hit, seaside heights down to toms river, at least the rain has moved out and the lightning has shists shifted to the south. so conditions are going to be allowed to improve now. heavy storms gown down long beach island. fortunately they are weakening as well. because you don't want to see a repeat of this. we still have a flash flood warning until 7:45 for that portion of ocean county. and the radar estimates, 4 1/2 ink inches of rain near toms river. 4.1 right at seaside heights. and that is just in about three hours just to put it in perspective. in houston, they had three times that amount in just one day with the flooding you've just seen. way more widespread

we begin with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. a rainy night ahead? >> not for everybody and not much longer. some places where it is raining right now. it is on the way out. but it's going to take a little while because we have the low clouds and fog right behind it. so the steadier rain, significant rain has pretty much moved out of the philadelphia area but we have some fog and drizzle in some parts of the area as you saw with the art museum there. there's no significant rain bigger drops of the rain. the drizzle drops are smaller. the radar can't detect it. northern delaware it's moved out. so we are seeing changes here. but it's taking a while, the heavier rain continues in sussex county. delaware and in cape may county new jersey. the greatest number of hours of rain as we have been expecting. but we're still expecting this thing to be moving out, for clearing skies to be coming in eventually, and things are look looking up as we head toward the holiday. my colleague first alert meteorologist sheena parveen is looking ahead to tomorrow morning's

. >>> now your nbc 10 first alert weather with chief meteoro glenn hurricane schwartz. >> well we hadly chilly days as we went through this week but different story this weekend. we've got some super weather for the broad street run tomorrow. it's going to be warmer than today. and today we got up to 74. and 80 plus. more than one day next week. maybe even tomorrow. well, we have mostly clear skies now, it's 57 degrees. the wind has shifted. we had the east wind for a couple days keeping the temperature down keeping the clouds in. not anymore. it's starting to shift. now the wind is knocking around a lot of the pollen. partly because we haven't had rain, and so the pollen is high on sunday and then very high monday and tuesday. so that's about the only thing i thinkthat people will be complaining about the next few days with the weather. it's 62 degrees at allentown but much cooler at the shore. the ocean is only around 50 degrees, so of course it is colder right at the beaches. it's going to be a beautiful start to the day. 58 degrees, calm conditions for the race. it's going to get

. >> nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz here to talk about the chance for rain where you live glenn. >> right, i would say probably less than half of you are going to be seeing any kind of rain during the night tonight. but there are some showers on the radar. some moving very quickly through the lehigh valley. we've had one or two develop just in northeast philly in the last 30 minutes. even that though has weakened as it's gone across the river into new jersey. there's more down in northern virginia. that could end up in delaware later this evening. and then there's another batch near lake erie. so nothing too well organized here as we look into the future cast by 6:00 7:00 some of that virginia activity hitting northern delaware and then headed toward the jersey shore. a bit of a break in much of the area, and then we watch to the west as another area of potential showers and storms comes in toward the midnight hour. shower threats for tomorrow and mother's day weekend forecast in just a few minutes. >> nbc 10 has new information this afternoon on th

nbc 10 first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz back now.mising things for that part of the weekend. >> what can we expect for tonight? >> it's going to be cooler tonight than it will be over the next couple of nights. and sunday looks spectacular. a lot of clouds around today, but very little in the way of rain. shown on radar. it's going to be a relatively quiet night, not much on radar anymore. and we're even getting some patches of clearing coming down from the northeast as drier air starting to come in from new england. and you can see, practically nothing on the radar, a couple of little showers in cecil county, maryland. only 57 in redding. it never got out of the 50s in redding. and other parts of delaware and south jersey closer to the water. and things are going to change as we go into tomorrow. but for tonight, it's kind of cool, it's going to be partly cloudy, and temperatures down in the 50s by 10:00. wait until you see some of those numbers. we'll see when the next threat of rain is with the 7-day forecast in a few minutes. >>

the clinical service chief at hahnemann hospital, tracy schwartz, nursing department director. guys, thanks so much for being with us and thank you for your work. i understand you still have five patients at your hospital, one in critical condition. can you give us an update on their conditions right now? any of them about to be relea d released. >> can be honest i don't have that information on me because we're in the emergency department. we do know one was already released, others were broken bones and management issues. they should be getting through physical therapy. >> that's okay. can you tell us the range of injuries on patients you saw with patients coming into this crash. >> what we got during the accident were predominantly trauma injuries. what was involved, patients fallen on, debris, most of them minor considering the accident. hand injury, rib injury, back injury. a lot of abrasion, cuts, sutton them, we cleaned them up. we weren't looking for details at that point. all in all, amazingly minor compared to the incident. >> tracy, you work in the emergency room or

chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us. and you've been saying this over and over again, we need this rain. >> yes, it has been a month since we've had significant rain widespread across the area. now, we still might not get that this week. but we'll at least get some shots of some rain. well, it's plenty dry right now across much of the area and the temperatures well it's warm. it got up to 90 degrees in redding today. 89 in philadelphia that's the warmest so far this season. we're still, as you can see in the mid-80s across much of the area. and redding, that did hit 90. allentown is 87. it's a different story right at the jersey shore. it's in the 60s just like it was over the holiday weekend. just warned ya back last week it was not going to be as warm. nearly as warm as the inland areas. now, what we're going to see through the rest of the night, well one or two little light showers later on. but the main threat is still well back to the west. i'll have the timing on when to expect those storms with the 7-day in a few

glenn "hurricane" schwartz is joining us now. >> well fortunately, the humidity has gone down but we have winds out there. glenn? >> yeah it is getting less humid. and that wind is bringing in eventually significantly cooler air. it's going to be a nice night for baseball. but it is a windy night. we've got gusts over 30 miles an hour. we have not gotten rain today. the drier air means we're not going to get more rain. we've only had .03 of an inch so far for the whole month. the temperature more than 8 degrees above average. and the warmest day, yeah since september 6th got up to 88 degrees today in philadelphia. 89 degrees atlantic city international where it's 87 degrees now and you can see how warm it is across much of the region. now, the wind gusts, they're strongest back to the west. it is gusting, it has gusted to 40 miles an hour in lancaster an hour ago. just a little while ago in pocono. and again, it is going to be windy for a while. then the cooler air comes in. still warm evening. pretty nice out there. but we need some rain. we'll see when we're going to get any signif

and nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz -- >> this is a serious situation. >> yep, when we get increasingly dry, plus we get the wind national weather service issues a red flag warning. in this case it's just until 8:00 tonight because the winds should be dying down. it's through all new jersey and all of eastern pennsylvania. and what it means is that the conditions, of course are favorable. very dry ground combined with the high temperatures, combined with the low humidity combined with the gusty winds add up to this threat. so let's see how the winds are doing right now. they're still blowing 10 to 20 miles an hour in many places but in others it's now less than 10. so we're already seeing a little bit of the diminishing of the winds. and that, of course, diminishes the fire threat. at least for a while. temperatures are still above 80 degrees in much of the area even 77 in poconos. also 77 in wildwood. cooler right at the beaches at the jersey shore, though. so it's warm and windy now, and it's going to get breezy and then kind of calm later on tonight. we do ha

glenn "hurricane" schwartz with the first alert forecast. >> and today was the coolest day we're going to see for a while, right? >> yeah it's going to be significantly warmer tomorrow, and then sunday is going to be warmer than saturday. one of the reasons, we're going to have fewer of these things the clouds hanging around that we've seen for so much of the day today. that's kept the temperature down along with the easterly wind. you can see the clouds continuing to come down from the northeast, but you're also seeing more and more areas of clearing. across the region and even in that live shot you saw some sunshine in the distance. nothing on the radar close by. looks like a dry evening. temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s except much cooler right toward the shore. and that of course, will be the trend overnight tonight. the clouds break up a little bit as we go through the night tonight, and temperatures drop into the mid 50s. they go way up as we head through the 7-day period. we'll see how much they go up coming up in a few minutes. >>> less than 48 hours to go now before th

. >> nbc 10 chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has what you need to know. >> tremendous changes over the past hour. the live radar shows virtually nothing in new jersey and very little now in delaware that was getting clobbered. about an hour ago, and look at the explosion of thunderstorms east of harrisburg. it's getting closer and closer to burkes county and lancaster county while look what's happened in delaware. we had heavy thunderstorms there there they are pretty much disappeared. future cast hour by hour shows this area coming in, especially to burkes county. lancaster county and even into the poconos. but as we go through the evening, it's moving into a more stable air mass. that east wind that came in and cooled us down that's going to help prevent any severe weather the way it looks coming through. now, there may be more rain later on tonight, but not nearly as strong as what is on the radar now. talk more about the threat of storms for tomorrow and a look ahead to the memorial day weekend with the 7-day in a few minutes. >> nbc 10 is tracking several new developments

glenn "hurricane" schwartz joins us with his forecast. >> a lot of activities tonight and this weekend, glenn. is the weather going to cooperate? >> for the most part yes. baseball weather, nice and warm there. but it's not going to be warm here at the shore. at cape may, they're going to be getting dense fog, going to be wind off the ocean, and take a look at how cold it is there right now. 60 degrees in avalon and 61 in beach haven. that's about as warm as it's been all day. 70s as you go a little farther inland, 85 in allentown. the farther you go away from the ocean, the warmer it's going to be this weekend. we also have that fog at the coast, it's going to be spreading inland overnight tonight, and the visibility dropping by tomorrow morning, could cause some problems. and that's why there's a dense fog advisory for much of new jersey and in delaware. talk more about what to expect over the weekend if there's any showers and also the latest on subtropical storm ana in just a few minutes. >>> all right. nbc 10 following breaking news. a deadly crash in center city involving a duck
