nbc's gadi schwartz has more on the tragic toned this labor day weekend. >> reporter: the u.s.st guard says they'll continue operations overnight. here at this memorial at the home port of the conception that scuba diving vessel on that charter, hope for survivors is starting to fade. we've heard from authorities that they've been searching the shore of the santa cruz island. so far no one has been found alive. show the tragic for many in this small community of santa barbara. we're told some of the divers that were on this excursion were from this area. a little while ago, we spoke to the first on scene. it was captain of a boat by the name of grape escape. he said he was woken up by banging on his hull. there were five men in a dingy. it turns out it was the captain and they were frantic about the passengers on board their vessel. they said they were unable to escape from down below where they are presumed to have been sleeping. we're talking about 34 souls, 33 and one possible crew member. the coast guard said this community needs to prepare for the likelihood that this may

nbc's gadi schwartz joins us now with the very latest.heriff's department heading out to where this horrible tragedy happened. it is just one of several sheriff's departments that have been sending dive teams to assist in this monumental task. right now that 75 foot boat, the conception, is sitting on the sea floor upside down, so it is a perilous recovery operation, and the loss of life out here is just hard to get your mind around. we're talking about 34 people, right now 25 authorities are confirming have died. nine of them are still missing, and the only people that seem to have been able to make it off that boat alive are five members of the crew including a captain. they were able to jump overboard, swim to the back of the boat where there was an inflatable dinghy. they got on that dinghy, and then they made their way to another boat that was anchored nearby. the captain of that boat saying those men were absolutely inconsolab inconsolable. one of them said that he -- his girlfriend was down below deck. others were saying that there

i am tom schwartz, the director. we are about to hear a stimulating presentation on herbert hoover's various humanitarian efforts. we are in the midst of centennial observances of his many food relief efforts beginning in 2014 with the commission for relief in belgium, 2019, with the american relief administration efforts, and 2021, with russian famine relief. ironically, hoover's humanitarian food relief efforts, which pre-and postdate his presidency, affected the lives of more people and his four years as president. perhaps no one in history provided food for 70 people in need than herbert hoover. his major humanitarian efforts span a half-century, so this conference offers a foretaste of a much broader topic. we are particularly grateful for c-span for recording this conference for later broadcast. the hoover presidential foundation provided financial support for the conference and all of today's events at the library and museum. their ongoing support makes possible all the exhibits, education programs and other p
