there was a 53 page document of the sclc had laid out. for me, i did not know what occupy was seeking other than a challenge to the very elite. but often times, it was a challenge to the private sector as much as the public sector. the campaign, they made very specific claims on the state. start spending more money on poverty, not running for vietnam. so there was certainly some spontaneity around participation in the campaign, but there were attempts to try to control it. the folks coming from the southwest, sclc spent all this money bussing them across the country, and they would pay for plane tickets home. the was only so much they could do even with the massive donations they got after dr. king's death. great question. >> what happened with the movement? the goals? >> they still exist. there are still lawsuits over land grants to this day. it starts in the 19th century, , he grows up in a pentecostal tradition and said he had a vision and god told him to help the poor, this is the issue and movement he needed to pursue. -- he goes to

and is there anything in there about the sclc's later relationship who actually was the mastermind behindthe 63 march. deftly could have a plan pull off the poor people's march. the march on washington had universal support. it was a critical organizer of that. but the march on washington head nothing like that kind of solid support of the leaders with the organizations i'm not sure at this point. i don't think he was in favor of it. i know he was opposed and they both fought that the march on washington was a mistake for the reasons that they discuss. that was one important difference. i don't think they were supporting the poor people's march. because a lot of those leaders did not agree that it was a wise policy. it was a wise strategy to have the poor people's march. thank you very much all for coming. king and everybody involved in the sclc, and that is how the poor people's campaign started. kinshasha: you are so modest. you played a little role in this, i believe. [laughter] give us two or three words on what maybe you did? i know you still have the love story of the century, but give it up a little bit. about your role in particular. peter: well, i of course, was working for robert kennedy, so my role was to be on his staff. -- on his staff, as one his assistants. -- one of his legislative it and changed my life. it changed my life because i got married to marian, but also it also changed in the same direction having worked with robert kennedy because i had the opportunity to go with him, and i think everyone knows the way he learned. and he had to touch things scare he had to hear from people. he had to see people. and the senators come even from their own state, senators didn't go out to see low people, -income whether it was in cities, or especially, rural areas. so, i learned from that. and it changed my life because i have been working on those issues ever since th

king and the sclc in 1965. that's my political mentor. that's guy i'm shaped -- i'm cut if that bolt of cloth. 1972 was the first time african-americans were elected to the city council in selma since reconstruction. i knew these people well. and just fortunate enough to have had them in my life that early because it really did shape a lot of my views, opinions, and thoughts. my initial campaign run was in 1992. it was not successful. ran again in 1996. was not successful. and then again in 2000 and was successful. from the time i initiated the process to the time i became mayor, very little had changed politically. the thing that had changed, the demographics of the community was changing. the demographics had turned into 65% or 70% african-american base, population. in this city. and that shift in the democrat fwrasks was causing a shift in the current seated mayor at that time. he was elected mayor in 1964, he was mayor in the 1965 movement he referred to dr. king as martin luther coon. he's the guy that actually -- that actually was m
