scola is the cardinal from milan; right? >> correct. cardinal from milan.to benedict xvi. personally more of an extrovert with greater optimism about the church's prospects in the here and now. it was widely believed that benedict xvi tried to hard to get reforms in place, the vatican bank controversy that had come along, the scandal after that. it is widely believed here he tried really hard, couldn't get things done he wanted to do and decided for a number of reasons that he would resign, but with hopes that reform would take hold after he advocated and a new pope came in. it really is a struggle of two competing thoughts. one is that the hierarchy within the church, sort of administration, if you will, would remain the same and they would work their problems out and expand the church. the other thinking is an outsider would come in, one not so closely tied to the administration of the vatican, if you will, and would bring in new thoughts and new ideas and new ways to bring the church forward in the 21st century. those are sort of the kpaoert areas. -- so

cardinal scola has been listed as a front-runner. they're calling him the reformer candidate. i don't see it that way. i see him as a traditional candidate. this would be a return to an italian pope. this is a cardinal ratzinger conservative theologian, so for me, that says a return to tradition, traditional catholicism. for me, the reformer pope would be, who they're calling the traditionalist, cardinal o'malley. this is someone who has reformed the archdiocese of boston. franciscans have been reformers of the church. i would like to switch those terms around and if speculation is that cardinal scola walks out on the balcony, i think people in america, from our perspective would say, a little more of the same old, same old. if a traditionalist walks out on the balcony, i think the church would say it is about reform. >> when cardinal was elected in 1958, people saw that as same old, same old too, and he stunned the world. so i think what is going to be very important, particularly if it is someone who is seen as a traditional figure, such as a cardinal scola, the oriole day w

it was sort of interesting because the main outsider was seen as an italian, angelo scola who doesn't have types but was seen as plausible and the candidate the insiders was in fact an out sider who is cardinal shera from brazil who has european rules but who is the arch bishop of sao paulo and seen someone who has experience at the vatican and can sort of keep things running smoothly and not be too much of a threat to the insiders. a lot of this is supposition and it's reading tea leaves and it's hard to nail this down but that's the general flow of things. >> rose: being there and talking to lots of people including cardinals beforehand was the idea that there was not much as you said speculation about him by people who have an interest in journalist or so called as you say vaticanologist. none of them had him at the top of the list as a leading choice or in fact as a necessarily compromise choice. >> now that he's been elected it seems like the obvious choice. i think one of the big reasons was the age factor because so many of the cardinals have been saying ahead of time we need a
