scott? >> pelley: we understand there is surveillance video being examined by the various investigators. we also understand that a third bomb that did not explode has been taken intact by the boston police and diffused. what could all of that mean? >> well, that's very important evidence, potentially. the surveillance video in particular might help identify suspicious people near the area. we know about one man who john talked about who is now being questioned as possibly linked. i want to emphasize possibly. the bomb or even remnants of the exploded bombs could tell us about how the bomb was constructed, maybe even who made it. the methodology that was involved. that could point us either toward and al qaeda affiliate like al qaeda in the arabian peninsula or a domestic type component so these are very important pieces of the puzzle as they start down the course of investigation, scott. >> pelley: boylston street right in the heart of boston is likely to be a shutdown crime scene for quite

scott? >> pelley: jonathan, let's take a moment and other kwrepbt the folks at home about where these explosions occurred. we have a map of boylston street as we zoom into boston. at the bottom of your screen there is the finish line where the first explosion occurred. second explosion was about two blocks back down boylston street. jonathan, can you tell us what's at the scene of the second explosion? >> that's a great question, scott, because the first bomb is right by the finish line and by the time the bomb went off where we were in the race the crowd had started to thin. had that happened an hour earlier, they were ten deep in that part of the sidewalk but because the race had gone to almost the end you had maybe three or four people deep on that sidewalk. and then two blocks up the question you had asked, that is just spectators. they line boylston. i mean, literally for three quarters of a mile that street is packed with spectators because it's the last leg of the race so people are a

one other thing, scott. security for this race normally is extraordinarily tight and before the race is run there are bomb sniffing dogs that go the entire route into the city. you have e.o.d. teams that do the same thing. but after the race starts people are allowed to carry backpacks with them and that's -- you've got a lot of colleges in this area that feed in, a lot of people coming in to cheer people on, bringing food and refreshments for runners. that's when what they believe happened is that somebody carried the backpack in after the race had started, planted those bombs or devices in a trash can along the route where the spectators were sitting and just a few feet from where the runners were going by. there were thousands more spectators sitting along the sidewalk cheering them on. it didn't happen that way and if there was ever a silver lining-- and in this case there isn't really one-- that would be the only thing that you could point to to say this could have been so much worse. scott? >> pelley:

now we go live to scott. a bit earlier on the program you were saying there was more investigator activity near the explosion sites. update us on what you're seeing now. >> sure sue. one sign that boston is coming back to life is the crime scene is shrinking. she was a graduate student in mathematics and statistics at boston university you can see that there is police activity and we saw a lot of it earlier. the bomb teches who were going through the area almost with a fine tooth comb trying to find any other evidence that they could come up with. it is a final sweep before they start opening more of the area. we don't know. now we're told it wouldn't be before 2:00 and preseemibly it will be after that. they have recovered very important evidence they include shrapnel from one of the two bomb bombs pieces of the actual pressure cooker was used in at least one of the bombs, potentially both of them. >> pieces of block nylon which could be from a backpack. and also bbs and nails possibly contained in a pressur

scott, the f.b.i. at this hour does not know how the bombs were triggered. >> pelley: bob, thanks very much. our senior correspondent john miller is in new york tonight. he's a former assistant director of the f.b.i., and, john, thaws of people were at the race. all of them probably had cell phone cameras. how does the f.b.i. sort through all of that? >> well, first, scott they're very aggressive about making sure they get all of it. something very interesting today. at logan airport as people were departing on international and domestic flights, the customs and border patrol, the agents from immigration and customs enforcement were greeting them on their way out and saying, "before you get 3,000 miles away, do you have an i-phone, do you have a camera? did you take pictures at the marathon? can we download that right now. can we get that digital media from you? they are going to be buried under a mountain of this stuff. what they're going to do is triage it. they're going to look at when it was taken

scott. >> pelley: bob thank you. our senior correspondent john miller is a former assistant director of the f.b.i. john, the men do not seem to be doing anything suspicious in these videos, so why does the f.b.i. believe that these are their men? >> reporter: you know, they have other video, including the one bob referenced where they believe they actually have on tape one of the suspects in the white baseball cap putting the bomb down in front of the starbucks at the second oncation. we'reason they selected the ted twre seeg here is they wanted to find the pictures that didn't have the most sinister activity but the pictureshat gave pplthe best chance of recognizing them. >> pelley: and one of the backpacks, we're told, matched from the debris that was recovered. >> reporter: that's right, and it seems to be the same kind of make, year, and mold backpack pell is a little circumstantial but, it's a good pointer. >> pelley: deslauries said in the news reference these men are deemed to be armed and dangerous. >> report

>> scott, we're getting a bet better idea of how this went down.a law enforcement says that two devices that were exploded-- he called them bombs-- were likely located inside trash cans near the reviewing stand. we saw one picture and also in another location along the marathon route in addition to that, we are told by law enforcement sources that another device has been recovered intact and unexploded. if that turns out to be the case-- and we have this on good authority that they have this device this their hands-- this will be important forensically. it will tell them how the devices were constructed. what they were made of. how powerful they were and could have clues that would lead them directly to the person who put that there. on the subject of potential suspects we have one law enforcement official-- and we want to be clear about what we know and what we're shaky on-- we have one law enforcement official who has told us there is a surveillance photo of someone described as a male, we believe, carrying what looked to be a couple of backpacks
