scott? >> pelley: sharyl, thanks very much. we wondered whether military options were feasible that night so david martin is joining us at the pentagon. david? >> scott, pentagon officials insist the tyrannies of time and distance plus uncertainty about what was happening on the ground prevented them from coming to the rescue. 1:11 after the attack began, a surveillance drone was orbiting overhead sending back pictures, but leon panetta, who was defense secretary at the time, did not feel he had enough intelligence to order military action. >> you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on. without having some realtime information about what's taking place. >> reporter: air force fighters were roughly two hours flying time away at aviano air base in italy. but they were not an alert. according to panetta, it would have taken a minimum of nine hours to call out the crews, arm and fuel the planes, and brief the pilots on their mission. on top of that, the aerial tankers needed to refuel the jets in flight

scott. >> pelley: rick salinger of kcnc, thanks very much. you know, we've seen so many high-profile murders involving guns, we were surprised today when the justice department reported that gun violence has declined sharply in the past two decades. in 1993 there were more than 18,000 homicides involving firearms. in 2011, there were just over 11,000. that is a drop of 39%. at the end of a sordid several months, the pentagon said today that sexual assault in the ranks is rising rapidly. that shouldn't come as a surprise. just last spring trials began for 33 instructors at one air base, instructors accused of assaulting 63 recruits. the president was asked about the issue today. he seemed to have run out of patience. >> we find out somebody is engaging in this stuff, they've got to be held accountable. prosecuted. stripped of their positions. court marshaled. fired. dishonorably discharged. period. >> pelley: the pentagon report that came out today says the incidence of sexual assaults against women in military is just over 6%. our research de

scott? >> pelley: bill, thank you very much. in philadelphia today there was a verdict in a murder trial that got national attention. a doctor who ran an abortion clinic was convicted of murdering three babies who had been born alive. michelle miller is at the courthouse. >> reporter: dr. kermit gosnell left the courthouse this afternoon a convicted murderer in a prison jump suit and handcuffs. prosecutors say gosnell regularly delivered babies alive at his west philadelphia abortion clinic and then cut their spinal cords with scissors, killing them. gosnell's defense attorney, jack mcmahon, says he and his client do not believe there was enough evidence that any of the fetuses were murdered. >> state of mind as any intelligent human being would be at this point in time. he's disappointed and upset. >> reporter: but eight former employees who assisted gosnell, despite the fact they had no medical training, pleaded guilty to lesser charges and that they did see various signs of life before the babies were killed. gosnell was also

>> reporter: well, scott, first of all, this area is paralyzed. getting around is virtually impossible. on the way here, we saw power lines down left and right. people trying to get around them, roads shut down. this used to be a neighborhood of single-family brick homes. it is now unrecognizable. the tornado came through here and shredded everything. now people are -- have been simply walking around all afternoon trying to find a way to cope. >> this has turned into a massive tornado. >> reporter: the storm ripped through neighborhoods in moore, oklahoma, splintering homes and trapping residents. command posts were set up and emergency crews dispatched into what looked like a burning war zone. >> me and my mom were getting ready to leave and our next door neighborhood told us there's no way that we could survive it so he told us to come to his house and we went into his house into the bathroom and that's when it just hit. i mean, we could just hear everything. >> i am standing in the middle of what used to be a neighborhood of single-family homes

scott? >> pelley: nancy, thank you. in florida this morning a man with ties to one of the boston bombing suspects was shot to death as he was being questioned by investigators. here's justice correspondent bob orr. >> reporter: the shooting happened inside this orlando apartment complex as an f.b.i. agent and massachusetts state police detectives were questioning ibrahim todashev about his friendship with accused boston bomber tamerlan tsarnaev. the two chechen immigrants once trained together at a boston area gym. but evidence also suggests a criminal connection, involvement in a grisly triple murder that occurred in september, 2011, in waltham, massachusetts. three men, including one who trained at the same gym, were found with their throats cut, their bodies had been covered with marijuana and thousands of dollars in cash. no one has been charged. but sources say during questioning last night, todashev implicated himself and tamerlan tsarnaev in the killings. as investigators pushed at him towards a confession, he sn

captioning sponsored by cbs this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley, reporting tonight from moore, oklahoma. the police here are telling us at least 24 are dead. eight of them children. about 60 people are in the hospital this evening, and the search for victims of the tornado continues over an area of 22 square miles. the building behind me was a steel reinforced concrete office building about two stories tall. completely destroyed. part of a devastated hospital complex. where the tornado hit, the destruction is complete. late today, the government weather experts confirmed that the tornado that plowed through here yesterday was an ef5, the most powerful there is. with winds peaked as high as 210 miles an hour. last night, the state medical examiner had put the death toll at more than 50. but it turns out some of the victims were counted twice. so the death toll as it stands now is 24. more than 300 people were injured. this evening search teams are racing the clock, digging through the rubble, looking for anyone who may still be alive. rescue work continued throughout the
