we heard from florida governor rick scott. blake joins us from miami. blake, what's it like down there? >> reporter: stephanie, the biggest concern here in miami is twofold. one, the storm surge that would come with this. because of that they're closing all the beaches here starting tomorrow night to keep people away from the water. and then the other big concern as you heard the governor mention is power outages. the problem is once a tree knocks over a power line in the middle of a storm like this, they can't just go out and fix it in the middle of the storm. he's warning that when you have winds of anywhere over 35 miles an hour they can't take those bucket trucks out to fix the power lines so you could see prolonged power outages which we have seen have caused deaths in the past because people are stuck in their homes without power and that could happen for days. so that's why the governor and the mayor here in miami have been warning people to stock up, do not take this storm lightly. just because it's not making a direct hit on miami doesn't mean w

governor scott, very affirmative in his message of lives being at risk. blake mccoy is at the national airport and schools are closed for the weekend. you are seeing people, how seriously are they taking these warnings? >> reporter: well, it is a voluntary evacuation here in fort lauderdale, 1. 5 million floridians are under some sort s of evacuations. we are not seeing a ton of people evacuating to be honest with you. the people we do out here say they are prepared and they had stocked up on food and water. this couple is here visiting from hollande a and you have be to florida many times before. this is your second time. what have you done to prepare? >> food and water and beers. >> reporter: you are staying at an apartment here near the beach. >> we are going there and we'll see tomorrow and tonight what happens. >> reporter: you are planning to go home tomorrow. >> saturday or sunday. >> reporter: well, good luck to you. so they're visiting here for the holiday from holland. the airport is closed. they have not report how it will be tomorrow. >> we know sea

blake mccoy is in ft. lauderdale. we heard from governor scott who said he's deploying another 100 members of the national guard. he was very, very serious. he said people will die. heed his warnings. evacuate. and walk us through, the last time you and i spoke this morning, we saw wind surfers. >> reporter: exactly. there are 1.5 million people under evacuation orders. i'm in ft. lauderdale right now under a voluntary evacuation for low lying areas but you can still see some people walking down the streets, coming out to take pictures and to take a look at the ocean. so this is exactly what the governor is warning against. he says, this storm is going to be serious and if you're not taking it seriously, you need to. and as we've seen tammy and bill talk about, the images coming out of the bahamas and haiti are just incredible and we need to heed those warnings. take a look at the ocean right now. the waves are really picking up. the concern here in west palm beach in particular with the storm surge that could come with this. all of this sand cou

blake mccoy who is joining us now. people are getting ready. we heard from rick scott this morning. give us the latest. what are people doing as they look ahead to landfall? >> gathering supplies and preparing. we have seen the track of the storm shift several times. he's telling floridians to have three days worth of supplies in the home. power going out is a serious concern. it would be quite some time before crews get in to restore power. the empty shelf, flashlights. they are out of bottled water here. they say they are expecting to get more emergency shipments in today. they are waiting for those. we haven't seen any yet this morning. governor rick scott has given multiple press conferences within the last 30 minutes. he was sounding the alarm. >> i cannot emphasize it enough that everyone in the state must prepare now for a direct hit. just remember, with the storm along the coast a small deviation from this track could mean a catastrophic storm along the east coast. >> it looks like the storm will be having the worst impact in florida's gold coast. brevard county has the only mandatory evacuatio
