scott broom is live outside of union station to tell us more on what travelers are seeing right now. scott? >> reporter: we are seeing a lot of officers, guns and bomb sniffing dogs all around union station this afternoon. and earlier today. but i also found a vivid example of some of the striking vulnerabilities in the u.s. rail system. security on amtrak today included a bomb sniffing dog that road the train from baltimore and tactical officers in full view and skeptisism from this frequent ride nearby. >> today was the first time i saw any policemen at all on amtrak. >> reporter: two miles from the capitol this is the scene at 16th street and new york avenue northeast. this is a driveway, a road. i'm going to spin you around and behind me here is the amtrak right-of-way. yes, a road ungated, unprotected where i could drive a vehicle directly onto the railroad tracks. the question is, if amtrak and the rail system is so secure why do you have things like this? a lock on a cable here but the cable lay on the ground keeping nobody out. beyond this a track side roadway toward nearby ma

in laurel, scott broom, 9news now. >>> u.s. park police are working to find out what triggered a double shooting on the baltimore washington parkway this morning. two men were shot while in their car near riverdale road. one man was shot in the arm, the other man was shot in the stomach. medics rushed both victims to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. police are now looking for a suspect. the northbound lanes of the parkway have been reopened. a rockville couple is in the hospital after an explosion leveled their home. we told you about this explosion on ashley drive yesterday. the blast scattered debris all over the neighborhood and of course it woke up neighbors. fire investigators say the explosion happened shortly after the husband was working on a dryer in the home. >> one of the pipes that was being worked on did leak gas throughout the night. eventually this gas leaking into the house eventually found an ignition source at which point the house did explode. >> neighbors say the couple moved into the home ju

scott broom reports that today the county council decided it was powerless to enforce the program. >>> maryland and immigrant rights organizations rallied in front of the montgomery county council building disguising its disappointment. >> tens and thousands of people who are honest, hard working residents of the county are too afraid to call police. >> casa and much of the county council are opposed to a new federal program that requires local police departments to send fingerprints of all suspects they handle to immigration authorities. the program is called secure communities and its an ever growing number of illegal immigrants. >> one of those is florinda, a mother of three now threatened with deportation to guatemala after accused of selling phone cards without a license. >> victims come forward and talking and reporting abuses to our local law enforcement officials. >> it's an argument most council members agree with. today, rather than making good on a threat to opt out of secure communities, the council voted for a water downed resolution to carefully monitor the program and a

our scott broom reports that none of the victims suffered serious injuries. >> reporter: these two school buses collided at that busy time of day here on stringtown road as buses were coming and going to the little bennett element school. one of the buses was leaving the school, coming in this direction empty as it apparently touched its brakes and lost control, came into the other lane and clipped a bus filled with 24 children. that sent that bus off the road, into the ditch and into the trees. there were 24 children on board, at least 10 of those children were taken to two separate medical centers for treatment. here's how school spokesperson danatofig described the situation. >> the students were quickly evacuated from the bus. at this point we know that 10 students were transported to area hospitals for evaluation and the bus drivers of each of the buses was also transferred. the fire department is telling us that none of the injuries appear to be very serious. if that's the case, we're very grateful for that. but they will continue to be evaluated and i illinois the police are contin
