scott brown also joining us chief economist at raymond james. scott, as a chief economist i imagine you will have to feel calls about a government shutdown and potentially about this political situation as we await boehner speaking. what will you say to clients when they ask you about the efks on the economy? >> well, the effects on the economy ought to be relatively small. you're talking about maybe a tenth or two of a percent off of gdp growth. it mostly shifts the growth around a little bit from maybe week-to-week or month-to-month. there is some concern we may not get an employment report next friday. and if it's a lengthy shutdown, a lot of the data collection is not going to be there. so it may distort the economic numbers not just for october but november as well. i think economists are certainly going to be looking uncomfortably at this. >> which is exactly the time we don't need our data distorted given where we are with this distended relationship with the fed. chad importantly last night janet yellen kind of reset everything. we came b

. >> brown: scott mayerowitz, you cover the industry. you hear about him.do you think is the biggest challenge for united now? >> the biggest challenge is to lure its passengers back. if you look at delta, for instance, they are boasting ability having the best on-time performance in the industry of the big three airlines, and united has been lagging behind there. many of the frequent flyers who spend tens of thousands of dollars of year with the airline, they need to come down and stop having these computer outages, have flights on time and have flight attendants and gate agents who are happy and interact with challengers. this will be a big challenge for them coming in. but as george said, he is big in transportation and the airlines are complicated, logistical organizations, so hopefully he will try to come in and figure things out there. >> brown: scott, do you hear anything about how any of this may affect governor christie, whether there is any speculation you're picking up, already? >> that's been one of the questions from day one in this investigati

for more on the jobs report and the market's reaction, we're joined by bob dole and scott brown, a chiefconomist with raymond james. scott, as you are the economist, what is the conclusion? what are you telling people now? >> well, certainly the nonforeign payroll number, even though it was right of expectations, there was a revision. that makes it about a wash. these numbers get revised. you're seeing a relatively strong mace pace of growth. there are two factors that give hawks ammunition. one is the increase in average hourly earnings which was slightly ahead of expectations. you want to look at these with a grain of salt, however, there's a built of fuzz in the numbers. still, we know the job market is improving, and really, the situation for the fed is they're looking down the road 12, 18 months and seeing the job market tighten. there's a lot less slack a year from now at the current pace. they're justified in raising rates. whether that happens in september is an open question. if the markets are calm heading into that fed decision, they may be more inclined to raise rights. it se
