reporting live in san jose, scott budman, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, scott. high gas prices mean people just can't afford to fill up, and some are stretching their luck along with their dollar. aaa says their roadside assistance for running out of gas is up more than 25% in northern california for the first three months of the year. >> a lot more people that are running out of gas and need assistance to get back on the road. it's happening pretty frequently, you know? it used to be a couple times a day, could be four, five, as many as eight times a day. >> aaa says some drivers are so low on cash they've even been called to come help fill tanks when a motorist is at a gas station. they also warn running your tank dry is not great for an engine. >>> not all rising prices are necessarily bad, though, if you own gold as an investment you have a lot to smile about recently. the price of that just keeps going up. people looking to take advantage of a record price for gold were selling some of theirs at this san jose shop today. gold closed this week at more than $

scott budman joins us now with that part of the coverage. he took a few questions and gave long answers. >> reporter: the president is known for talking tech in silicon valley and i played it light at facebook, joking with facebook ceo mark zuckerberg about getting him to wear a suit. it was that sort of thing. then he got down to business giving some very long answers to specific questions about immigrati immigration, the economy, social networking. raj had mentioned he was treated like a rock star, absolutely, only instead of holding up lighters, they're holding up cell phones. it was a very receptive crowd. you have to say this could be the kickoff to barack obama's 2012 re-election campaign and it took place at a -- not only a receptive audience, but a place where president obama doesn't have to go around the country saying let's create jobs. he's able to come here to silicon valley and say, thanks for creating so many jobs. so much of america's economic recovery is resting on the shoulders of silicon valley and the economy was topic one
