business and tech reporter scott budman joins us from linked in headquarters in mountain view. scott, pretty close in mountain view to google literally speaking, correct? take it away. >> reporter: you know, it really is, raj. what a day. this is a company we've been following for weeks. it priced its ipo at 45, went out this morning at 83 and topped out at the close of $94 a share, a pop of more than 100%. yes, there are comparisons to google and also another mountain view dot-com pioneer, netscape. all of this put smiles on the face of other beay area social networking companies. as linked in wowed investors, another social networker, gild of san francisco, was taking notes and liking what it saw. >> i think this is going to be that moment where it really starts to emerge. >> reporter: this is gild's ceo. while linked in was scoring the biggest ipo since google, the future of gild was getting brighter by the minute. it too is in linked in's professional networking space. >> and everyone knows facebook, everyone knows twitter. but here's a company that isn't necessarily all tha

scott budman has the very latest on what happened out there. scott? >> reporter: yeah, raj, as you say, a tragic day. also an amazing rescue that took several hours. i want to show you some of the video that was captured today by our chopper up in the air. this was called a habitat restoration project. at the top of the hill in la honda in rural san mateo county, this is south of highway 84, there was a truck doing the restoration project on a dirt road that tumbled into a canyon below. now, chp officers tell us there were six people in the truck. one died. there was one fatality because of the injuries. also, two of the passengers sustained major injuries. another passenger sustained a minor injury. those three taken to stanford hospital where we are told they are this evening. now, this rescue took quite a while, over several hours. the terrain in the area, very rough and hard to reach. in fact, we're told that some of the rescue crews were actually stuck while trying to rescue the passengers. they were eventually freed. helicopters also eventually

scott budman has been following the money problems in san jose and boy, scott, this is a big budget gap to fill. >> really is. i'll tell you, just 90 minutes ago, the mayor declaring a fiscal and public safety emergency saying what he wants to do going forward is cut pensions on city employees because we could be facing a $150 million shortfall. on top of that, there are layoffs looming. the san jose fire department is once again at the center of the city's budget battle, facing cuts they say will increase response time to fires like this one. >> we have the firefighters right now, reducing the number of fires. on to multiple companies, multiple emergencies during a short period of time. as well as major incidents we might have here in san jose. >> reporter: after the compromise of a year ago, the san jose police department is also facing cuts. at today's budget hearing, officers were in the audience wondering if they'll face layoffs. >> the potential cuts, it truly is devastating for the police department. if there is no agreement, we're looking at laying off over 260 of our sworn pers
