let's bring in scott budman. scott, apple's bottom line continues to grow. >> reporter: if you thought the refinements were not going to be enough to excite consumers, you were wrong according to apple's numbers. the company says it sold 3 million ipads since they went on sale friday, 3 million in three days. customers aren't the only things heating up. they are dealing with consumer complaints of the new ipads getting hot. the company is not commenting and consumers are still buying but some have said they've brought theirs back in for an early trade-in. apple making news with its stock. the company says it will pay its first dividends since 1995, $2.65 a share each quarter to stockholders. they will also buy back $10 billion of its own stock, all of this is cat think to investors. apple shares closing at an all-time high today of $601 each. another tech company that recently went public is not faring as well on wall street as apple. groupon has plans to grow but with new features and a goal to go higher here in

let's bring in scott budman and why make this decision to give money back? >> that's a good question. companies give cash back in the way of dividends to reward investors to keep them into the full and attract new investors. a company that pays is seen as a more stable investment. this is a first cash dividend they paid in 17 years. the announcement was made this morning as apple has been under pressure to tell investors what it plans to do with the nearly $100 billion in cash. the apple ceo held a conference call to lay out the plan. here are the highlights. apple will pay stockholders $2.65 a quarter. that's cash coming to you every three months. the company said it will buy back $10 billion of their stock and also good news for investors. it removes the shares from the market making shares more valuable. it reports about $98 billion in cash holdings. in all, apple spends $45 billion to do this, leaveing it with a still hefty bank account. investors love this sort of thing and gained another $15 billion to close at a new all time high. >> thanks, scott. a

"this american life" is apologizing. this comes as apple fans open new ipads this evening. in san francisco we found 100 dedicated apple users ready for the opening of the apple store on stockton street this morning. some securing their places in line last night to make sure they could get their hands on the newest device. others waited at home and hired people to take up the -- pick up the ipads for them.
