our business and tech recorder scott budman has been following the latest hp mess. scott, this could affect a lot of people here in the bay area records it really could, janelle. hp employees a lot of people here and there are a lot of investors that own hp stock here, although that numbers that been dropping lately. hp admitting drastically overpaying for autonomy stock. they paid $11.4 billion last year when meg whitman was on the board of directors. today whitman admitted they're writing down nearly $9 billion of the deal because they paid more than autonomy was worth. whitman also claimed she and her company were duped. >> we believe that there is a willful effort on the part of certain members of autonomy management to mislead shareholders when autonomy was a publicly held company and mislead potential buyers, including hp. >> here is the bottom line. investors don't care why the money was lost, but they fled for exits from the opening bell today, sending hp stock to its lowest level in a decade. for its part, autonomy officials, many who left after the buyout d

scott budman joins us. where are we headed here? >> reporter: a lot of direction, raj. some local, some overseas. you mentioned apple. here is what a lot of people all over the country are talk about tonight. wall street worried what politicians are indeed calling the fiscal cliff. which comes from a previous budget deal. basically, what this means is by the end of the year, unless there is a new deal to decrease the country's deficit, two things will happen. one, massive government spending cuts kick in. literally hundreds of billions of dollars worth of cuts. and two, a tax increase. many analysts say this could plunge our economy back into a recession and lead to a sell-off in the stock market because of investors losing confidence in our government's ability to balance the budget. now the worry on this has already started, adding to the fiscal cliff concerns. europe's economy is struggling again. and here at home, apple continues to tumble. all of this leading to a 300-point drop in the dow, and a 2.5% fall on the nasdaq. cupertino-based apple down more than $22. it

let's bring in scott budman. not uncommon for post-election blues but a lot more damaging than years past, isn't it? >> that's right, no one wants to win and then have the stock market tank, but today's losses had less to do with the election and far more to do with problems overseas. and we'll start with apple. after dropping $22 a share today has now seen its stock price fall 20% since recent highs. apple ordered another company to pay $368 million after a ruling that apple infringed on its patents, this on the heels of a forced apology and a trip to court all on the heels of the sales of its recent ipad. wall street has the fear of what financial experts call fiscal cliff. all of that dropping the stock market by 2% today. if you're looking for something looking up, how about silicon valley's social networking. 30 million election night tweets. that's a record for a political event and no fail error anywhere in sight. at its peak, twitter said it saw 15,000 tweets a second. that's 43 times the number of tweets
