now the family of a missing bay area fwigirl is getting new information about her remain >> i'm scott budman at the consumer electronics show. what's hot this year? mobility and gaming. coming up, how silicon valley is playing a huge role. >>> good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm jessica aguirre. >> and i'm raj mathai. just into our nbc bay area newsroom, a crime lab in richmond has determined that a bone fragment found near stockton is not that of a hayward girl kidnapped in 1988. back in october investigators sifting through remains in an old well gave them a bone fragment from a child aged 5 to 14 years old. they believed it could have belong belonged to mikaila garrett. the time frame fits the killing rampage by the so-called speed free killer who dumped several bodies in lyndon. police say the bone fragment is not a match for the young girl. >>> a measure voters passed in november in the three strikes law. and potentially a law that now puts thousands of prisoners back on the streets. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez spoke to one of the first three strikers to win his freedom. she j

scott budman has the numbers and the news. >> the numbers are especially big. earning season kicking off for tech companies, google and ibm and intuitive surgical. the number of clicks up, everything advertisers and investors want to hear. the mountain view search giant said it's in the process of hiring 1,400 workers as it expands its core businesses. google shares up about 5%, or more than $30 a share in after-hours trading. job growth also coming from a bay area amusement park. california's great america said it will hire 2,500 people as it gears up for the new season. the santa clara park reopens march 29th. you can apply for a job now on its website. lots of good things can come from a new job. but about the only thing to come from a now famous internet hoax is a cautionary tale for our kids. here's why social networks deserve your very close attention. >> more than anything else being said, manti te'o is a college educated young adult. so if he could be fooled by a social network prank, imagine how vulnerable a 13-year-old could be. >> i think every child

our business and tech reporter scott budman is here to take us into space. >> we're going to go far, far away, raj. a couple of cool stories tonight. first, the kind of picture that sends space fans speculating an internet traffic skyrocketing. this is one of the recent images spotted by the curiosity rover and sent back here to earth. it's a petal shaped cluster which has some thinking it might be a flower. others say it looks more like quartz. now back in october a similar picture turned out to be a piece of plastic that fell off the rover. while the current mars rover is cool, imagine a new model that could hop around mars. it's something innasa is workin on with stanford university. we cheered along with nasa when the curiosity rover landed on mars. but imagine a few toor where when we get to the red planet we can explore it much faster with a new rover being called the hedge hog designed to work in the low gravity martian atmosphere. >> advantage of the fact we have very little gravity and this is where we can hop and carry a lot of distance without having to roll over as we do
