our business and tech reporter scott budman is here. you are covering the story extensively. what now? presumably he's back home on the stanford campus with his parents. does he stay here for days, weeks? i know he's got that court appearance january 3rd. what does that mean? >> reporter: right. that means because i'm told the court appearance is actually virtual that he will be here for a little bit of time. it would be odd to have him go back and forth coast to coast, especially now. so it's virtual. he'll be here for a little while. but i don't know how that will last depending on when he actually goes to trial and we presume that will be in new york. >> okay. so speaking of this trial now, his childhood buddy, or his college buddy, who worked with imat ftx, has already spilled the beans to the feds. his ex-girlfriend or some sort of girlfriend relationship has also spilled the beans to the feds. what has happened to him now? i mean the walls are closing in. >> reporter: yes. let's spell this out. it's the co-founder of ftx. she actually ran alameda, the hedge fund of ftx.

scott budman has the answers. >> reporter: we get asked this question a lot and here are some answersn the bay area, it's good news if you are in the market for a house. the value may drop a bit but it's unlikely your property tax bill will go down, too. home prices are falling here, and according to the chief economist at zillow, will likely continue to fall in the near future. >> we think that prices will probably settle 3.6 to 4% lower by the end of about 2023. >> reporter: on top of that your monthly payment, should you buy a new house, is dipping, too. >> with inflation having peaked already, mortgage rates could be on the way down. >> reporter: if you're already a homeowner, do those falling home values mean falling property taxes as well? >> and the answer is usually not. >> reporter: take it from the santa clara county assessor larry stone. property taxes only drop if the assessed value of your house drops and your house is only going to be assessed when you sell or renovate it. >> it's unlikely the market value will drop below the assessed value for almost all properties.
