scott gottleib joins us, former fda commissioner and cnbc contributor. er and lumina do we need to recalibrate how many cases we're seeing from fully vaccinated people, scott or is it still an unvaccinated problem? seems like that israeli news may have pressed some of this. we know it's only 90% or whatever the number is so you can have this happen are there more happening because of the delta variant >> potentially there's more breakthrough infections, that's what we're seeing in israel. over time you get decline in the vaccine effectiveness. they are very effective against hospitalizations and severe outcomes we're seeing that in the israeli data and uk data the case fatality rate is down because more of the vulnerable population is vaccinated there are breakthrough infections occurring in vaccinated people. i don't think it's an overwhelming number but we're not tracking it here in the united states. that's the bottom line we should be tracking it cdc is only tracking breakthrough infections among people who are hospitalized. we should also have a bett

scott gottleib says we may be further into the epidemic joining us is dr.izer and illumina. scott, there were better numbers i think over the weekend that cases weren't at the levels we saw last week. are these signs of progress? are we going to be disappointed this week? >> well, there might still be a week where we see cases continue to go up as some underreporting on the weekend in certain states some states don't report at all. i think more observable trend is what's going on in the united kingdom where causes are clearly going down there's a very clear trend down. it seems like they've peaked whether or not they're going to get a second bump because they lifted on the mitigation in the last five days, it's unclear they didn't have a lot of mitigation in place. they did have some measures for venues light nightclubs. so it's possible that they're going to see a second bump as a result of that i think it's probably unlikely they'll probably just be seeing a slowing, deceleration. the u.k. is turning the corner, pretty good indication that we're further i

i talked to former fda commissioner scott gottleib. the efficacy data is there to authorize the vaccines. military would mandate the vaccines when we have f full full full licensing. >> what is your opinion about the mandates? >> we do it for other vaccins. we know from the public health st standpoint it is a valuable tool to protect the public. i understand people's hesitation until the vaccine is fully licensed. health care workers? i work at a hospital. we have a different responsibility to patients. you need to get vaccinated. you shouldn't put your patients at risk. everyone else out there, these mitigation measures will come. you are seeing people saying you get tested or wear a mask all the time. it is one or the other. no more honor system with the delta variant preying on the community. >> what about when the fda gives p full approval for the pfizer vaccine? then is it something you think could be helpful to have businesses maybe local municipalities or places requiring vaccinations? >> absolutely. i believe businesses will do

scott gottleib also serves on the boards of pfizer and illumina.uch to talk about in terms of what we're seeing around the country, mostly in the unvaccinated what's your big take away about what seems to be quite a move in terms of the trend >> that's right. a lot of the disease we're seeing is in unvaccinated people los angeles county doesn't have a single case in vaccinated people it's all in unvaccinated people. what we've said before is 85% of the population will develop some form of immunity to covid. that doesn't mean we'll be at hea herd immunity. if you assume 85% we'll vaccinate 6% of the population and you further assume that of the people who remain unvaccinated, 40% have had covid, that's a safe assumption, i think it's probably a safe assumption, then you get to figures of around 25 million people who need to become infected with covid. they need to develop immunity with covid that's consistent with other estimates, other models that have been put out. they say 30 million americans will become infected with delta. that's between now a
