scott gottlieb. welcome back, dr.o on the question of younger adults, good news that pfizer is going after the teens now. when it comes to younger children, which is being tested, are there different safety concerns and different dosages being tested >> typically the fda would look at 12 to 15, which is the age group that pfizer or the company i'm on the board of filed for today as little adults and so they do look at children differently, of course but typically the kinds of considerations are similar when you get below 12, you start to think about reformulating a product like this, a vaccine, because below 12 you probably see more of an immune reaction to the vaccine itself so you might test a lower dose. that's what the companies are doing. pfizer is doing that, moderna is as well where they're doing dose de-escalation studies. basically testing lordosis in younger kids to see what's the lowest dose you need to elicit an immune response 12 and above you could use the same dose typically. this is true of a lot of va

scott gottlieb. he sits on the boards of pfizer and illumina and a s. a cnbc contributor. dr. >> well, look, i think that the cdc is going to make a recommendation to their advisory committee that the vaccines should resume. the purpose of the pause that was put in place about more than a week ago now was to give the fda time to explore whether or not there were more of these rare side effects that they had uncovered. and in the ensuing time they've done a thorough examination and doctors would have surfaced additional cases if they had seen them. and while we've discovered additional cases, while the fda has reported on some additional cases it doesn't change the undermieg equation that this is a very rare adverse event. so i think the balance certainly tips in favor of using this vaccine, having it available to consumers and providers, and i would expect the cdc to make a recommendation that this vaccine resume use and that there maybe be some additional warnings on the label under the emergency use authorization advising consumers but not restricting its use in any way >> w

scott gottlieb. he's a member of the pfizer board and why don't we start right there, dr. gottlieb. the world progress on the vaccine and how much does that play into us being able to put covid behind us in the united states of america? >> there's no question that it's a challenge getting vaccine into low and middle-income countries, in particular. i think as we get into the later half of this year, there's going to be much more supply available to put into different markets. i think the problem and the challenges are still going to be the logistics. some of these vaccines need very complex culturing in storage and delivering them, especially in low-income countries that don't have the health care infrastructure can be a challenge. covax is working on that, the u.s. government, the biden administration has given a lot of money to support that. the companies that donated a vaccine to covax, including a company i'm on the board of, pfizer. so some of it's being addressed. something on the order of what we did under pepfar, massive resource to making vaccine is available. in terms of w

scott gottlieb says he expects cases to drop dramatically going into may. do you see that happening? >> i think it could start to happen, but we need to continue vaccinating very aggressively. i worry exactly as meg said we're rapidly transitioning our country from a supply issue, you know, as scarsity to a demand issue. we have to get the vaccine to the people who are currently very reluckedant the most reluctant are rural communities, primarily white evangelicals >> and black people in rural areas like the mississippi delta. both really troubling for doctors. critics are say, dr. del rio, these point to states like texas as an example of why all states should reopen. it's been 40 states about since the governor reopened it, and average daily cases are down 41%. so, opening concerns, are they overblown? >> you know, there's so much that we yet don't know about this virus and how the dynamics work i think they have texas on one side, michigan in the other. what happened in michigan? what went wrong that things happened differently i think part of it could b

saying we're in a category 5 hurricane right now and at the same time former fda commissioner scott gottliebs there's not going to be a fourth wave and every day more and more people are being vaccinated. how do you see it? >> stephanie, good morning, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle, as most things are. when you look at what's happening in places like brazil and india in the settings of these new variants, despite large numbers of people with an infection before, you are still seeing spikes in cases of deaths and the concern here in the u.s. we're entering a period of time where 30% has one dose, partial immunity, and you have areas where the amount of vaccine is not the same, some are behind, some have higher proportions of b 119 that is more transmissible and lethal by at least 70% so you're entering a period of time where in this background people are letting their guard down, pandemic fatigue, weather is changing, you've got the holidays and there's vaccine optimism. we want that, right? these vaccines are incredible, stephanie. the real-life numbers from the cdc and the fa

scott gottlieb said we were seeing higher numbers of the virus in younger people. in brazil they have 500% 600% increases in those 30 to 49 years old. those were groups that previously avoided the worst of the virus so far. why is this changing now? is it because younger people have said that's it, auto i'm a he tornado. >> i think that's part of it, people are up and about more. we have to remember that with a more transmissible variant, what that means is that the activities we thought were relatively safe are now going to be more dangerous because you have a virus that spreads more easily. again, i think this is this a call to action for all of us to hang in there for a little bit longer and i think for public officials to change some of the messaging as well. i think the cdc really needs to be more explicit about what it is that fully vaccinated people can be doing. right now there is mixed messaging that it is safe to travel but still you shouldn't be traveling. i think that's confusing for people to understand. i think they should say here are all the activit

scott gottlieb, former fda commissioner he sits on the boards of pfizer and illumina thanks for joiningont, but a step back with the j&j vaccine. i know you've been on a bit earlier in the week to discuss this, but sum it up for us is this a gross overreaction or do you support the actions that have been taken? >> look, i think it was prudent for the fda to take a close look at this. a lot of the j&j vaccine was used in the last three weeks, so 50% of the doses that were delivered were in the last three weeks so if there are rare side effects associated with the vaccine, they're going to identify it this week and probably next week you'll finding these cases so i think it's prudent to try to fully characterize this i do believe this is an important product. i believe if this is a rare side effect it's going to come back to the market perhaps with additional labeling language to advise physicians and patients on what to be alert for, maybe with some restrictions, maybe with some age restrictions until we better understand its full profile. this is a vaccine that's important in ways that

scott gottlieb he serves on the board of pfizer he has the latest op-ed in the "wall street journal"of a vaccine passport >> that's right. the challenge with the question around the so-called vaccine passport is people don't own the information verifying they have been vaccinated. they don't have a digital signed application or document or qr code to demonstrate they have been vaccinated. we have the cards people received and that is not good enough those are available on e-bay you can get those cards. people won't accept the cards as proof of vaccination the federal government was scrambling for a way of who was getting vaccinated they required the states to report the information to the 64 jurisdictions that exist in the country to track the vaccination. in states vaccinating a child, that has to be reported to the 64 jurisdictions this system was set up so pediatricians can inquiry to see if a child has received the vaccination schedule or information about the covid is put in the same system the problem with the system is it was never designed to be accessible to consumers. consu
