scott gottlieb says we're, quote, vastly undermeasuring the infection underway here in the u.s. do you agree and if so, how concerned are you? >> i think so. we've been undermeasuring cases. it's still difficult to get 'test. in many places it's become much easier than earlier in the pandemic i think what dr. gottlieb might be talking about is, if we are further along, that means we'll probably peak soon in the delta variant in those unvaccinated places, which might be a good thing, we might see cases slow, but the main issue is certain pockets of the country with high-risk individuals that are requiring hospitalizations that's what we want to try to avoid. we want the cases decoupled from hospitalizations in places where cases have spiked and you don't have enough of those people vaccinated, you're going to see that trance late into hospitalizations hopefully not as bad as what was the case earlier, but it's still something completely avoidable and completely self-inflicted. >>> doctor, we appreciate that inside >>> record smashed on wall street the dow jones industrial average

scott gottlieb, always good to have you. for joining us >> thanks a lot. >> obviously delta is top of mind for everyone. we're wondering what kind of impact this will have. my question is on the breakthrough cases we're hear more anecdotes about it it's starting to show up a bit in the data. do we know anything about the breakthrough cases that is, people who have been vaccinated, getting covid-19 delta, and whether they can transmit it to our kids, to the unvaccinated people. >> we know when you're vaccinated you're far less likely to transmit it. whether or not you develop a mild insh where the virus levels are much higher, whether or not you're more likely to transmit in that setting than the old strain, it's possible, but on the whole, you're less likely to transmit it. right now the cdc is not tracking breakthrough cases in the outpatient case, which i think is unfortunate, and there's very few breakthrough cases being hospitalized even in florida where there's a lot of cases, there are very few hospitalizations on the

scott gottlieb, former fda commissioner and cnbc contributor.ced i was in the middle of a really large group of people. and there weren't any -- you know, very few people were wearing masks. it's different we're back we're back to feeling more comfortable to life being normal again, doctor. then, you know, it occurs to you, wow, here i am, surrounded by, you know, literally hundreds of people, and we haven't done this in about a year and a half. should we feel absolutely fine, absolutely safe? >> look, i think in some parts of the country, we should feel relatively safe. in parts of the country where prevalence is low and vaccination is high, people can feel confident socializing again. it'll take time until we feel comfortable doing it again, but the risk is low. other parts of the country where vaccination rates are lower and the delta variant is gaining a foothold, there's higher risk. people need to exercise more caution. louisiana is seeing cases up missouri is engulfed in infection. florida, oklahoma is ticking up. there are parts of the c

scott gottlieb earlier., i think if we look at vaccination rates, especially amongst the most vulnerable, so those 65 and over, we have vaccination rates that are incredibly high. they're in the high 80s. so i think that's a positive when we look at, you know, not only as the delta variant being caught but are people ending up in the hospital and is it resulting in death i think that's an important differentiator of where we're at today versus where we were at a year ago i don't think it's going to be as disruptive as what we've seen thus far but certainly it's a bump in the road and i think something that none of us wanted to think was going to happen as we shed our masks and looked forward of getting back to life as usual. i think this is a potential drag on growth, but i don't think it's going to be anything like last year. i think if we look towards markets like the uk where it looks like things are starting to trail off a little bit with the delta variant, i would hope that we could expect something sim

scott gottlieb, now former-fda commissioner, author of the book "uncontrolled spread." and cnbc contributor for which we are thankful. doctor, at least nine states have already banned mask mandates in schools. broadly, are you concerned new cdc mask guidelines will have no impact >> well, look, i think in terms of mandating that or recommending that people who are vaccinated need to wear masks, again, i think what could be more valuable to people who are vaccinated is just practical guidance on what it means to be vaccinated and what their individual risk is being vaccinated sub -- substantially reduces risk that they have a bad outcome, that they will be hospitalized, or have a severe case of covid. what we are seeing with the delta variant is it is so highly contagious, there are some breakthrough cases where people who are vaccinated are developing mild or asymptomatic infection and probably have the ability to pass on that infection. so if you are vaccinated and you become symptomatic, don't assume that you don't have covid. and if you are caring for young children

scott gottlieb says we need to get around 3 million shots into arms a day over the next two to threely make a big difference in this country. but with a third of americans refusing or at least hesitant to get that shot, how do you achieve that? >> it's going to be really hard. i agree with dr. gottlieb that we have to do better with. the delta variant, if you have been fully immunized, you have nothing to worry. this is a highly transmissible virus. so if you haven't been vaccinated, you should get vaccinated. we need to get more people vaccinated in this country to protect ourselves from the dealt air variant. but there's a lot of people saying i'm not going to get immunized. a couple of things will help. hyper targeted markets will help. go to a local community and understand what the issues are. number two, you need to work with trusted members of the community, such as churches and community based organizations. and number three, it's really important that the fda gives full approval to the vaccine soon. as long as they're under emergency use authorization, a lot of people will s

let's start with a startling statement when i heard it from scott gottlieb, he says that the majority of people who have not been vaccinated and have not had covid-19 already will get the delta variant. they will be infected with this. do you think that's the reality that we're headed toward? >> i unfortunately do think that's where we are heading. listen, this delta rare varianto much more transmissible than the prior variants of covid-19 that we've seen. it takes less time being around someone being infected, and once you are infected you are more likely to spread it to others. it is just going to decimate people who have not been vaccinated yet. it's what we're seeing already in missouri, arkansas, nevada, and elsewhere. these states where vaccination rates are so low, the portions of the state with low vaccination rates, their hospitals are getting filled up with the unvaccinated, and i expect that to be true across the country over the weeks and months to come. >> dr. ranney, i want to ask you about something that caught my attention as a parent. the american academy of pediatric
