scott gottlieb. >> thanks for having me. >> let's talk about your new book. one of the major themes of the book is the u.s. health care institutions. we are very unprepared to deal with a pandemic like this and we are seeing some of those same complaints especially with the cdc. can you talk about what are some of the root causes of those additional problems and what we could do to fix them? >> i think we need to look at public health appeared in is through national security. if we think of public health and public health preparedness through that orientation, you start to think about how you put in place different kinds of catastrophes to us -- to respond to a crisis of this magnitude. there is a perception that cdc had this and could mount a full-scale response to a crisis of this magnitude but it's not the kind of organization they are. they do exquisite scientific analysis of outbreaks. it's a very retrospective mindset as far as how they gather information. they don't provide partial information. they don't have an operational capacity to actually mount

that was an interesting interview you just had with scott gottlieb. can you talk a little bit about what your biggest take away was when it came to getting people, getting hesitant people to get the shot? >> this was a big topic this week like the biden administration's new list of what they're going to do to combat the pandemic. dr. gottlieb was talking about the final 10% and how we always knew they would be difficult to reach. i was scratching my head like we have way more than that left to go. it got me thinking if we knew it was going to be so hard, what about the other 25% of adults for so that have been vaccinated ? how is it all going to shake out and how much leeway can we make into the final frontier? tina: that's a great point. what i was thinking when i heard this announcement about the mandate, one of the things that is striking that i think experts are really going to look at is the fact that there's not necessarily going to be a testing exemption. a lot of experts pointed out that that's a wide open loophole for people to avoid getting

scott gottlieb suggested it might take four to six weeks.eks. we know it's urgent right now for kids because the case numbers we are seeing is higher than ever in terms of the proportion they're making up in terms of the pandemic about 26% of overall cases in early september were kids. that compares to about 16% we've seen the entire pandemic hospitalizations are also at record so there is an urgent situation here but it will be a few weeks. we have to see pfizer file and then how long the fda takes to review. >> it's interesting the dosage, the way it works we know about baby aspirin and things like that i always think that's weight related, size related. they've got great immune systems we're envious, the older you get, you get the same response with a lower dose. i guess when you can do it, if you can use less it's better this was pfizer because moderna is already higher than pfizer for adults, right? so i wonder how you would dose moderna for kids >> yeah, we're going to have to see that, what moderna ends up doing. they do have for adul

scott gottlieb that we're doing all we can to get vaccines to children in the fall.the meantime, use masking and other measures to keep our children safe and reassure parents that help is on the way and the form of vaccines for children under 12. >> brennan: for parents, what do they need to look for in their children? are you seeing these infections develop in the form of some of these syndromes, like miss-c? who is ending up sick in your hospitals and how sick are they? >> doctor: in addition to prevention, margaret, we need to continue to emphasize to all parents and families the importance of timely diagnosing through testing. once the child is displaying symptoms, respiratory symptoms that could be consistent with covid, covid pneumonia, fever, it could be shortness of breath and other symptoms. and then triage the care appropriately. decide whether that child needs hospital-based care. we know how to treat children at this point in the pandemic. we know that more than 98% are due to the delta variant, highly contagious, but we're able to take care of these chil

scott gottlieb is with us. his new book "uncontrolled spread" is out tomorrow.ll us about it. >> well, look, the data is encouraging. it's going to be submitted to the fda very quickly. and subject to the fda's careful review of vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 could be available as soon as the end of october. this was a study in about 2200 children across five different countries. 90 different clinical trial sites examining of ten microgram dose. that's one-third the dose being used in the adult population in children over the age of 12. advisor evaluated three different doses. three different strains. and the reason they settled on this ten microgram dose is it struck the best balance between a robust immune response, antibody levels with less vaccine related side effects like arm pain and fever. so the company wanted to find a dose that would be tolerable in young kids while still providing adequate efficacy. efficacy on par with what we were seeing in the older populations. hopefully this dose strikes that balance. fda has to make a careful review. assuming

scott gottlieb, on the boards of pfizer and illumina, and his new book "uncontrolled spread" is comingf where we stand with the plan for booster shots, and why it is the way it is. >> well, look, the administration needs to back into some approximate date in terms of when they're going to roll out booster shots we know there will be booster shots made available to some component of the population, particularly older individuals, particularly in nursing homes with a vulnerable population, at some point given the way the data is emessaging the administration needs to back into some kinnell of deadline, because it needs time to put in logistics. we saw that with the trump administration, it took six to eight weeks, and at that point we were losing about 10,000 people a week, so that delay was unfortunate. if you want to avoid a situation with a long delay between the time that the boosters get authorized and the time to make them available, you need to know the approximate date so i think that's what the administration is trying to do the reporting today, it's unclear to me what that repo

scott gottlieb and a member of pfizer's board of directors.fda and the white house. is there science to back up the need for the booster or did the white house get a little bit ahead of themselves? how can you explain that? >> i don't think the white house got ahead of themselves. they had to back into some kind of deadline. they didn't need to put out a date but approximate time frame when boosters would be available. you have to put in place logistics to deliver them if you do it in nursing homes. it could take weeks to get that in place. there is clear evidence the boosters can benefit some portion of the population. debate within the fda and cdc today will be what population can benefit the most from boosters. if you look at the data coming out of israel collecting good data seems to show people above the age of 60 vaccinated a long interval ago benefit from boosters with reduction in infection and cases of severe infection. there is a population for whom these shots could benefit. >> dana: what about side effects from a third shot, a boos

scott gottlieb, his new book, uncontrolled spread. that book is out next month.white house what do you think? >> let's focus on the mandate of small businesses businesses with 100 or more employees. the issues related to the federal work force and health care workers probably fall more squarely within the purview of what the government can do the part of this is the mandate on businesses with 100 or more employees. they have to go through a rule-making process, assuming ocha hasn't started this even the emergency rule will probably get challenged in court. they'll have to issue guidance on howbusinesses implement tha and give some kind of grace period to get that into effect best case, this is probably going to be a tool or policy that affects the fall of 2022. certainly not going to be implemented in time for this delta wave by summer time, i think it will decline so this is something for the fall 2022 season we've vaccinated over 75% of adults we are not going to get above 90% even with this rule making if we continue to chip away, we'll get to 80% if this rule
