i want to bring in scott hamilton, an aviation consultan with lee-han consultant. what do you make of this discovery coming out of australia? >> it's hopeful, but we have to be cautious. we have been down this road before when the chinese issued satellite imagery of objects of a similar size and they turned out to be false leads. something that is 24 metres or 80 feet long is a very big piece of whatever. if it's part of a winning, where the fuel within exhausted, i could see where that could be floating. but i would be surprised if it were a part of the fuselage. i would have expected that to sink. >> i know it's pure speculation here, but these two large objects, you say possibly it could be the winning, if anything. >> yes. if the plane flew to fuel commust exhaustion and then glided into the ocean, the wing tanks are within the winning. it's conceivable when the wing broke off in a water landing that you might have an attack portion of the wing where the empty fuel tank would allow that to float. that's speculation. >> here we have the satellite images. how dif

joining us now is an expert in the aviation industry and consultant scott hamilton. es out there? and given that, how surprised are you this plane fell out of the sky at cruising altitude? >> the airplane is indeed one of the safest airplanes that you can have. there's only been three incidents, this being the third incident of an accident with an airplane. in terms of why this fell out of the sky, it's too soon to speculate on that with any degree of certainty. it could have been a catastrophic structural failure, which is very unlikely. it coup an engine failure, but i doubt that. it could have been some sort of criminal act. >> now scott, in all of those situations, i mean, you know this type of plane very, very well. so this is about two hours into the flight pattern. take me inside the cockpit at that time in this aircraft. what would have been happening if any one of those incidents unfolded that you just mentioned? would we have heard anything on radio or otherwise? >> well, if it was a catastrophic structure, you probably wouldn't get the opportunity to radio.
