for more now, let's turn to scott hamilton, joining us live via skype from seattle, washington. first, many of these airlines, they rely on self-reporting when it comes to mental illness, but this case raises the question, does that really work? >> well, i guess it's sort of like the problem pilots have with alcohol. if you self-report, it works. if you don't, it doesn't. the annual physicals that pilots are required to to through may or may not include any questions about psychology, any psychological evaluations. lufthansa said they don't do psychological evaluations after the initial hiring. so self-reporting works when it works and doesn't when it doesn't. >> scott, another question that people are raising now is this idea of making it mandatory to have a second person in the cockpit. so what do you expect to happen, just given what we saw in this case? >> well, here in the united states after 9/11, that became a requirement. any time one of the pilots leaves the cockpit to go to the bathroom, you'll see a flight attendant go into the cockpit or in the case of american airli

. >> for more now, let's turn to scott hamilton.joins us live now slowa skype from seattle, washington. we heard this report that apparently one of the pilots was locked out of the cockpit minutes before the crash. i want to get your reaction to that. >> well, the fact that the pilot goes out of the cockpit, probably went to the bathroom, that's pretty standard. what is really puzzling here is why there may not have been a flight attendant that went into the cockpit after he left. that's standard procedure here in the united states. and i don't know what lufthansa's policy is, butted a a flight attendant gone in, she could have let him back in. >> obviously we don't know what happened in that cockpit. we don't know if it was either the pilot suddenly felt ill or if it was something more sinister than that. but in terms of security, what can be done to make that situation of pilots leaving the cockpit and one other pilot trying to come back into the cockpit, what could be done to make that safer? >> well, the pilot who was outside th

i'm joined by a triple 777 pilot and scott hamilton and john cox and anthony davis. i want to start tonight with a picture of the cockpit of the a-320. now to the layperson out there who doesn't fly, you look at this cockpit and you think, wow, this is a lot of stuff. actually this is a relatively easy aircraft to fly and it is set up systematically in most of the a-320s the same way. this aircraft was built in 1990 so obviously there's probably been a lot of upgrades in the cockpit as far as technology since then but this is a basic set up of an a-320. the instruments look the same. there's a lot of redundancy in this cockpit. when it-- you hear a lot about squawk codes and transponders. they are related. a transponder is a piece of equipment that you'll find in the cockpit right here and there's two of them. that's part of the redundancy. the pilot and the co-pilot would each have a transponder to operate. if the aircraft is hijacked the transponder code would be 7500. the pilot would digitally punch in 7500. air traffic control would know right away there's an air
