scott, who was a vestry member of saint john's. he also the general of the united states army at the of the civil war. this window was dedicated in his behalf by hamilton fish, who was secretary state during president grant's administration. and hamilton fish was also a member of saint john's. and again, another example of the beautiful loren glass work and the detailing which we hope to maintain and preserve for as long as this building exists throughout the history of this church. people can talk about famous people who have been here, but most of the people were. members of saint john's were not famous people. they were ordinary citizens who wish to go to a church service somewhere near their neighborhood. when washington experienced the horrific event of the british burning the capitol in 1814. almost one year to the day after that summer, the cornerstone was laid. and at that time, the editor, the national intelligence or newspaper, wrote an editorial which sort of summed up what the feeling at the time and what st john's in its own way symbolize the people at large. and i'm going to quote that that statement and reflecting on that same day, only
