scott heidler is with us from indonesia. you are in the area where most of the victim's families are living. what are they told about how things stand today? >> yes, when we spoke last there was a live video stream from the headquarters for the search and rescue operation in jakarta to the family members here at the airport where the aircraft took off. there'll be a briefing. it's going on most likely what was told to the family members is told to the media now. no, we are not expecting major revelations. as you hinted at - there has been sightings of different things, smoke, an oil slick and debris. these are things we'll expect over the coming hours and days until there's definitive proof of the aircraft. that's because there are so many eyeballs from the sea, the sky. the united states has been involved now. south korea is going to be involved. china, so many different eyeballs on it. anything on the sea that could be anything related to the aircraft will be investigated. that's why we are getting a lot of reports. they a

scott heidler what more can you tell us from bangkok? >> 8510, about 35 minutes into its flight when it dropped off radar. they are engaged in a search and rescue mission that's been going on now for several hours. the plane dropped off radar over 6 hours ago now. they are in the east java sea. airbus 320 series. now this aircraft can be outfitted for low craft airlines to seat up to 180 people but we know it is less than that on board. most of these people on board are indonesians someone from france this from airasia itself. singapore where this aircraft was bound military air force and aircraft are also going to be involved in this search and rescue. what's most likely where it dropped off radar we are hearing that the aircraft just before it dropped off radar requested a deviation in their route. that means they wanted to take a turn. sounds like it was because of bad weather in the area. it needs to be made known that at this altitude, this is kind of a cruising altitude. most of the time in weather systems you would kind of be abov

scott heidler is with us from surabaya, where the plane departed. just get us up to date on to the latest on the search and rescue mission. >> for the very latest in the search and rescue mission is it's a true multinational operation. you have assets in the sky and on the sea from malaysia singapore, and also australia. p3 orion, a sophisticated aircraft has been deployed and searching the 200km stretch in the java sea. we heard earlier from officials from search and rescue. we are at terminal 2 this is where the plane took off from. there's a small area inside just for family and friends on board. they briefed them in private, and came out and briefed us and said they are expanding the search and rescue operation because the weather conditions are better and they have a bit more of an idea where it might be. they have more assets. singapore agreed - sorry, there has been agreement between indonesia and singapore that they'd use underwater surveillance equipment from singapore. that's been unveiled and goes with the head of the search and rescue op

scott heidler is in the indonesian city of surabaya from where the plane departed. scott, we know indonesia accepted offers of help from the neighbours. what can you tell us about that? >> there's a lot of accepted assistance. it's a multinational effort. there's malaysia singapore, australia involved. singapore recently in the last couple of hours have come out that they'll supply underwater assistance. it comes to both technical machinery, and for personnel who are expertise in this. that has been offered and accepted by indonesian officials. the australians had provided an australian aircraft. a sophisticated aircraft and that has been searching through the area. it's a big area about 200km stretch, if you will in the java sea and they have been searching since the sun rose this morning, hours ago. we are expecting to hear from the vice president of this country, that was supposed to happen a couple of hours ago. we have been waiting for him. it doesn't mean that he'll have a big announcement. he has become the face of this crisis for the government in indonesia.

to our correspondent scott heidler live in lahore. has the city effectively been closed down? >> well, it's a good question. this is a city of almost a million people, the second largest city of pakistan, the most powerful as far as the punjab province is concerned. what they have done is they took the city at 18 different points, even though the administration is saying it is more than that, two dozen, two points have been blocked. i'm standing at liberty square, the center of town. this is a place which is jam-packed with traffic on a monday. as you can see. every day at a standstill, a population of almost 10 million, as i mentioned, is not able to come out. people are not able to go to schools, shops are closed and imran who arrived in the city will address a large crowd. as you mentioned his demand is that the audit should be held, and the prime minister should announce a judicial commission, otherwise he is planning to shut down the country. >> this was the point i was going to come to next, imran khan's support in lahore is strong, and he would expect people to follow h

scott heidler tell us more about the search for the bodies and what's happening to them when they come back. >> exactly, we saw these two bodies come back. within the last hour they were brought in an air force craft. the bodies were brought back in coffins. the governor of surabaya was that airasia officials were there. they are being transferred to a police hospital very close to the airport. that is where the identification process is going to go often. that is where the family members quite honestly near there will be moved to. it is going to be slid over moved over to that hospital in the coming hours. we know that some of the fannie mae members have already moved over there. airasia officials have already moved over there. that's what's going to be happening. we are also hearing that those other five bodies that they have retrieved are supposed, they are going to try i should say to bring them back to surabaya, they hope tonight if not tonight, weather permitting, tomorrow. the exact same kind of ceremony, exact same kind of receiving that the other two bodies have had. >> the we

let's now go to scott heidler who i believe can join us from surabaya. so scott we know that the operation to try to recover the wreck and and the bodies are ongoing now. how long do you think that's going to take? sphwhrits a >> reporter: well, it's a 24 hour operation. it's about a thousand kilometers from the airport where the aircraft took off and about 10 kilometers where it dropped off communication with the tower. they are able to focus on that. we know there are two indonesian navy vessels helping to retrieve the bodies. we know we can confirm that there have been at least six taken from the water probably more. those will all then be coming here to the airport. there's going to be a facility or a couple of facilities rooms where these bodies will be brought in for the identification process. now 24 hours, how long will this take? we're hearing from some military sources, they are expecting hoping rather than expecting that the retroofl of the bodies retrieval will be finished by wednesday. unless they know how many bodies they can retrieve or see

jazz's scott heidler is in surabaya, where the flight originated. the items discovered, how deep is the water there, and how close do investigators think they are to discovering the all-important black boxes? >> it's not that deep when you look at the waters. compared to the mh370 aircraft go down. this is not that deep it's about 150 meters deep. we know that they decided the operations on wednesday. sector 7, that's where the debris was found, the bodies were found on tuesday. sector 5 is above it. they are doing a operation there, there's retreefl in sector 7, search operation in sector 5. both of these operations or separate operations have been put on pause. >> i understand that the family members of the souls on the flight, they are following every step of the way. what was the reaction when some of the footage came in showing the bodies in the sea? >> they were distraught, as you can well imagine. they saw that. they saw a large stream of the press conference held in jakarta. here in a crisis center in the airport. we hear now what is going t

scott heidler speaking there. let's go to veronica pedrosa joining us from changi airport. paint us a picture of what is happening there in singapore. at changi airport. are there families waiting to hear as they are in surabaya. >> we are not sure. the changi airport group, public relations people are keeping a tight lip about what is going on behind the barriers that leaves the relatives holding area. they have not revealed how much relatives are in there. what they have said is that they'll reveal that a bit later on. the place is open for 24 hours, they say, in order that relatives and friends, next of kin, of whom there are something like 30 plus in singapore can come and get information, updates as soon as possible. they can get assistance they've been provided with food and water and counselling. so that - earlier on today we did those, we saw one relative arrive and leave again quickly. it was reported that he was the husband of somebody on board the plane, but he again was kept away from the media, so that - to protect his privacy. that is one aspect as regard the

scott heidler joins us from pakistan. you van looked in the school where the attack took place. what did you see? >> we were escorted by the army into the compound. we could see the wall over which the attackers were able to enter into the compound. about 20 meters from that wall is the main auditorium. the attackers went into the auditorium. that's where the maximum number of children were present, they were pinned council because they had no escape. the attackers made sure that there was at least one of them on the main area. that is where a number of people that were killed was over 100. just behind the auditorium was where the administrative block is. this was gruesome, because that's where the suicide bombers blew themselves up. the walls were splattered with human remains, blood, all the administrative documents strewn across the ground. indeed, horrific scenes in the school. >> three days of mourning declared in the country, how did the people in peshawar and across the country feel, and what were they saying about the government? >> people are shocked. most families are
