right now joining me cnn political analyst jackie kucinich and scott jennings and robby mook. you worked in the senate when jeff sessions was there, now the attorney general of the united states. moments ago the president called him disgraceful. he's already called him be leaguered, very weak and said he's very disappointed with his performance. how can jeff sessions stay on the job? how can he live with himself and show up to work every day with the president attacking him like that? >> well, it's rough existence. it's been some time since the president has come after jeff sessions in this way. these are harsh words this morning. all i can really say, jeff sessions as far as i'm concerned is a man of high integrity. i think he served our nation well and served the state of alabama well. i'm glad he's in the cabinet. i think he's done amazing work at the department of justice and it strikes me what jeff sessions decided is that his work on behalf of the american people as attorney general is more important than being upset about a president who likes to communicate -- >> it's

scott jennings, your turn. to john kelly, the chief of staff, what should he do today?> i agree with a lot of what congressman kingston laid out. i have the utmost respect for general kelly. he's a patriot, served our country, his family offered the ultimate sacrifice to our country. i think he deserves the chance to come out and explain what happened. to say, look, i'm the chief of staff. these personnel issues do stop with me. the white house needs to construct a timeline. the failure to construct a timeline at the beginning of this is what caused this to unravel over time. so putting general kelly out there with a plausible timeline to explain who knew what and when, even if it shows the white house made a mistake, even if it shows poor judgment was used, being honest and transparent at this point is the only way to restore credibility in this process. and general kelly is the only person who could make that statement and regain the credibility that they've lost here. i think putting him in front of the press, letting him explain a timeline, let him answer questions.

all right, joining me right now, political commentators scott jennings and sally cohen. you first, it was just, you know, wednesday that there were loud calls for kelly to step down, lose his job and now kelly is saying he's implementing these new changes which means if you don't have full security clearance, then you do not have access to top secret information. is this enough to help him save his job and perhaps better secure the white house? >> well, it's certainly the right thing to do. i think in the wake of any kind of a mistake which the handling of this porter situation was certain lay mistake by any measurement, all you can really do is learn from it and try to move forward and try to reassure the american people that we're going to improve the thing we just messed up. and so that's what john kelly is doing here. i think the other thing, working in kelly's favor right now, is that there are a number of republicans in washington, especially the united states senate, that are encouraging president trump to keep john kelly on the job. i think the one thing they sho

. >> congressman swalwell, i appreciate your time. >>> back now with jeffrey toobin, milgram, scott jennings, scott campbell, even perez as well. in terms of the options that the democrats have, it's pretty limited. they basically have to if they want this memo out, they have to work with the department of justice and the fbi now. >> it's not their candy store. the republicans run the white house. the republicans run the house of representatives. and this is a subject to majority rule. but i think it is just worth pointing out that what the administration did when the nunes memo came out, they said fbi, we don't care what you think, we're releasing this. today, when the democrats have a memo that they want to come out, they say, well, the fbi thinks this is very -- this is very important so we can't release it. i mean, you know, how stupid do we have to be to believe this nonsense? i mean, it's just -- >> scott, does it not seem hypocritical to you? >> no, a, you don't know what's in the memo. to make the allegations -- you know that. >> what about the nunes memo? >> the other memo was prett

was that surprising to you, scott jennings? >> no. kinds of shootings, when it happens, it's tragic for all of us who have children. the thought of them going to a place that is supposed to be a place of peace and learning is a place of chaos. every family in america plays it doesn't happen to their family. i think back to the bush administration, i served as a special assistant to president bush, and i think that's when we last had gun legislation in this country. january 2008, in the wake of the virginia tech shooting, a big bill that beefed up the national database to screen out people that should not buy weapons. i heard people say we can't get to a solution. the republicans can't come to an agreement. the parties can work together. >> would you support sensible restrictions on assault-style weapons? >> i don't think people should have access to weapons that have violent tendencies, violent histories, mental health issues. that's a nonstarter for me. one thing about gun control and banning guns moving forward, we have to have a re

. >> i want to bring into the conversation van jones and scott jennings. in this letter from rod rosenstein, it says the democrats can rewrite this with help from the fbi once the fbi and the national security system weighs in. what is wrong with that? >> first of all, a short lie requires a long rebuttal. the problem you have is the first memo should have never come out in the fliirst place, had all kinds of innuendo. it created a suspense of unease and suspicion in the fbi. it was a couple of pages. a lot of damage in a couple of pages. the idea that you want to respond and now you can't. you are moving into the direction of one party state. and that is the problem. one party rule in washington dc. even though the minority had certain rights and certain privileges, tomorrow you might be in the minority. this sense of back and forth. that is now flushed in the toilet toilet. and what is now out there, some of the worst allegations of the fbi. stuff put out there over the objection of our national security. i am not one of these persons who runs around wit
