. >> joining us now cnn political commentator scott jennings, cnn political analyst natasha alford andon. we're hearing all of these excuses coming from republicans and they're shifting and evolving. they don't stand up to simple questioning. >> some of these excuses are ridiculous. we've seen this during the trump years, this shifting attempts to defend him at all costs. it's the die on every hill syndrome. the problem with dying on every hill is you wind up dead. one of the things i learned during the trump years is you can't defend everything, although some things are worth a defense. i do think representative turner is right, though, in requesting congressional oversight of these documents, we've seen bipartisan calls for this, the senate intelligence committee leaders want to see the documents and i don't see any reason why an investigation at doj, any congressional review can't happen simultaneously. we trust committee members, they have clearance as well. if it was so important to get these documents right now, then i do think the congress has oversight, a compelling reason to k

karen finny, former spokesperson for hillary clinton's 2016 campaign and scott jennings shaking his headaring part of your weekend with us. karen, let's start with you. some good news recently for democrats that are campaigning this year. but they are running as president biden's approval rating remains below 40%. how do they contend with that? >> well, actually we have seen a little bit of a bump in president biden's numbers. and in the generic ballot, democrats are running ahead. you know, we have the opportunity to talk about the inflation reduction act, lowering costs for the american people. and a slew of other accomplishments, including infrastructure, which we have been trying to get done and gun safety measure. so democrats are able to run on those things. at the same time, we're seeing a better climate in that inflation seems to be cooling off. but democrats aren't taking anything for granted. that's why you're seeing cabinet members, president biden and the vice president out across the country very aggressively in the coming weeks talking about our accomplishments but also tal

. >> let's get perspective from elie honig and two political experts, scott jennings, former specialnt to george w. bush. good evening to you. phil, let me start with you. is there any credibility to this question of the timing of the search so close to the midterm elections? >> i think senator blunt made a great point there, which is that donald trump turned over some documents in january. that was the point. if you go back and look at the timeline, the archives said we're missing stuff we should have, like those infamous letters from kim jong-un. so, if we're talking about when this thing could have been resolved, we can look at january, 2022. if you are trying to resolve this in good faith and turn over the things you ought to turn over, that the moment it could happen. the national archives goes doj and discovers there is material there. they go to mar-a-lago in june. they visit this room where it's being stored say you've got to secure this a little bit better. it's happening right before the midterm elections. but it's also been 18 months in which donald trump has had this mate
