scott kelly, by the way, has already been to the international space station twice. the first time in 2010 he went up for one month. and then the following year he went up for nearly four months. it was during that expedition that his sister-in-law, arizona congresswoman, gabby giffords was shot. but his next mission, well, it is smashing several records. this will be the longest trip ever at the space station and upon his return kelly will be the first u.s. astronaut to have been in space that long on a single mission. the 48-year-old says he is honored to have been chosen for the job and he will have a fair amount of communication with his loved ones back here on earth. >> the act to occasionally have a videoconference with friends i think for me personally will work well for me, similar to what i did last time. we also have a telephone on board. it is kind of like calling on a skype. >> reporter: now the main purpose of this trip, medical studies. scientists want to analyze how the human body reacts to long-term exposure in orbit. this is part of nasa's larger pla
