phil lebeau has the ceo scott kirby with us. >> thank you, scott, for joining us this morning. have 97% compliance, saying they have at least one shot, fully vaccinated in the next couple weeks, if they aren't already. yet you're going to have to fire 593 workers. what are your thoughts about having to cut those workers? >> look, i'm really proud and gratified that the united team, excluding the people who have applied for exemptions, 97% got vaccinated it proves that vaccines do work and you can get a huge percentage of your workforce vaccinated it was never going to be 100%. i feel bad for the 593, less than 1% that are going to leave, but we're focused on doing the right thing for united airlines. it's great to have the ability to just move forward now. >> scott, after you let those workers go, and you have 2,000 who have applied for a religious our medical exemption. likely those jobs will either be put on some type of a leave, but they won't be working the front lines, so you're looking at roughly 3% of your workforce who will not be on the job, so to speak, in the office

joining us now to talk about this is the ceo of united airlines, scott kirby. thank you so much for being with us. and look, first things first here, can you just tell us how many of your staff, including folks on the airplanes and folks talking at the counters are vaccinated a in the point? >> we had a real increase because our deadline is now september 27th and our management ranks are 95% vaccinated and almost 90% of the whole company is fully vaccinated. >> so september 27th is the deadline to be fully vaccinated. which means you're waiting for it to kick in. you need to have gotten the shots already, right? >> right. >> and then if you have an exemption, what happens there? it's delayed this requirement? >> yeah. so for all of our customer-facing employees, so a pilot, a flight attendant, gate agent, for those exemptions we're going to work to find some other places for people to work. but, alternatively they're going to go on temporary leave on september 28th until we get to a point where we think covid is enough that it's safe for them to be back in the

joining me now for more than is the ceo of united airlines scott kirby. re. >> thank you. the numbers really tell a story of success, and i heard you say that this vaccine requirement has become a recruiting advantage for united airlines. >> yes. >> how so? >> yeah. i mean, it is amazing that when we've had job fairs recently, we've had people showing up to the job fairs saying they came to united airlines because they want to work for a company that puts employee safety first and stands for doing the right thing. that wasn't obviously the reason we did it. we did it for safety, but it's a nice icing on the cake. >> for sure. i mean, do you now see this requirement as a competitive advantage for united? >> well, i've said from the beginning i don't want this to be a competitive advantage. anything that's about safety i want to encourage everyone to go to the highest standard and do the same thing. i mean, it is turning out to be a competitive advantage, but i hope and i'm doing everything i can, i've had some calls in the last 24 hours with other airlines

scott kirby spoke about this. he says 98.5% of employees have been vaccinated.ack in august 6 was when they announced 67,000 employees in the united states would have to get vaccinated or face getting fired. kirby said these numbers are proof vaccine mandates by companies do work. united gave employees until the end of monday to get at least one shot of the coronavirus vaccine, and united says it will begin the separation process for employees who did not get the vaccine starting as early as tuesday, except for some employees who sought religious and medical exemptions. six of them filed suit in federal court. they have been given some extra time if they successfully applied for those exemptions until october 8th they could stay with the company. that is when the next court hearing on this is scheduled. isa? >> thanks very much, pete pete muntean there. still to come on the show, for more than 15 years daniel craig had been bond, james bond. now with the final 007 film about to premiere, he reflects how his role has changed his life. that story in just a moment.
