and now let's context with scott lucas, a professor of politics at the university of birmingham joining us live this hour. let's start by talking about this statement from the president's lawyer, rudy giuliani. that statement claiming mr. trump never had a conversation with james comey. last year telling him to ease up on the former national security advisor michael flynn. that statement, scott, in and of itself directly contradicts comey's memo and even contradicts giuliani, what he said before on nbc news before here in the united states. what do you make of this new information? >> first of all, it's rudy giuliani's tactic. first it's like wait, it never happened and then if it happened it's normal. he did this only last week when he was talking about how it never happened that there was a meeting with the russians with a level of adviseders including donald trump into 2016, but if that meeting happened it's collusion and collusion's legal. he's done the same thing here. we know that james comey is on the record as saying that he was asked by donald trump for his loyalty. we know tha

. >> scott lucas is a professor of international politics at the university of birmingham in england. good to have you with us. >> thank you. >> so let's focus on this major contest, the ohio special election in the 12th congressional district whereas we saw republican troy balderson declared victory in a very close race with his rival danny o'connor in what was previously a safe republican seat. so what might this signal might occur in the november mid-term elections? >> it signals it's going to be one heck of a show. probably i think the most important mid-term election in u.s. history. if and when eventually balderson's victory is confirmed that this is vindication for them. whereas the democrats will say even if they can't overhaul that narrow lead, look, there was a 13% swing to us from the last congressional election and from trump's victory in 2016. now, that's part of politics. i think what's important here for me is that, one, it shows you that each and every district that is contested in november could potentially be in play. there will be some that will be safe, but we're g

earlier, scott lucas, professor of international politics at the university of birmingham, explainedut standard signals, which is, all is going to be ok. in fact, this is a regional process, and the north koreans are not only talking to the americans, but also the chinese. the north koreans are saying they are taking steps to reduce tensions, so why maintain sanctions on us? the chinese will not completely go against international sanctions, but there are signals they might look at specific areas where they might pull back. the russians are already taking steps and signalling to pyongyang, we will also give you, for example, visas for north korean labourers to give you some kind of economic assistance. if we are being open and honest about this, we would talk about — this will be a staged process that will take many months. you will not see north korea giving up its nuclear programme on day one. similarly, you will not see the us withdraw all its military troops from south korea on day one. but the problem is, that long and hard diplomatic process doesn't make for glorious headlines,

let's speak to scott lucas, a professor of american studies at the university of birmingham.enatorjohn mccain, talking about how he was able to bridge the political divide in american politics. what is your assessment of the type of political force, if you like, that he was? in terms of his politics, he was a man who in shifting positions could divide people at points. early in his career, it was almost ended by ethical concerns. but later he advocated strongly. he was the leader of a campaign on finance reform. at one point he was very hostile towards immigration, supporting some of the toughest anti—immigration laws in the country but later he was promoting immigration reform. at one point quite hostile to lesbian and gay rights. but later he became more, as it were, accepting of people in terms of different backgrounds. but all of these shifting positions including support for the iraq war, for which she was criticised but later supporting the rights of protesters in syria, you always hear from his colleagues today and from family and friends, that this was a decent and ho
