as cbs's scott macfarlane reports, questions are now mounting about the security breakdown. [ sound ofre ] >> reporter: cbs news has learned the secret service did not sweep the building the shooter used to fire on the former president even though it had a direct line of sight to the stage, it was outside the security perimeter. but a local sniper team was inside the building at the time of the shooting. >> there he is. >> reporter: new video shows people in the crowd were pointing to the man on the roof at least two minutes before the first shot was fired. >> get behind the tape. >> reporter: 13 seconds before the shooter opens fire, people run away from the building. former president trump was on the stage a little more than 400 feet away, where two sets of sniper teams behind him point their rifles in the direction of the shooter, appearing to spot something before the first shot rings out. the sniper teams opened fire, killing the would-be assassin. >> the entities, state and local, they are largely maybe operating on a different radio channel than the secret service. >> reporter:

[ sound of gunfire ] >> get down, get down! >> reporter: over 30 minutes more than previously known. at 4:27 p.m., one countersniper texted his colleagues, the shooter knows you guys are in there, referring to the building he just left. at 5:38 p.m., in a different group chat, an officer sent a picture of crooks and says, i did see him with a range finder looking toward the stage. still, 40 minutes later, crooks had a clear line of sight at the stage when he shot trump. >> seemed to have a comprehension of the security arrangements, if you will, and seemed to have really done a deep dive into possibly how to get around those. >> reporter: there were other failures of communication. beaver county, pennsylvania, held a morning security briefing that day. secret service was absent. in fact, that s.w.a.t. team says they never spoke to secret service on the day of the rally until after the assassination attempt. this new timeline comes as an fbi investigation reveals

and i want to get to scott macfarlane, our cbs reporter who was on the ground covering the rally for cbs news. scott, when really the unimaginable happened given how high security procedures are at a rally like this. >> reporter: the profound failure of enormous magnitude in securing this event. when you're on the rafters inside this rally site you can see a car dealership, you can see office buildings in the distance. you're in your line of sight. for everybody that came in, the thousands of people who were here today, you had to go through a magnetometer, your bag searched, opened the zippers, checked everything, looked at your bother bottles. everybody who went through those magnetometers was screened. yet something like this happened in america at an event secured by the u.s. secret service. to tell you from being here, being in the middle of it, gunshots don't sound like they do in the movies. they just don't, at least not these. we all conflated them initially for fire crackers. some of us are kicking ourselves for taking so long to duck for cover, and you get a sense now from a

. >> norah: i want to go to scott macfarlane, there are some updates in the investigation into that shootingd attempted assassination of donald trump. >> that rally stage behind me here in butler, pennsylvania, it's been untouched since saturday. it's a crime scene. the fbi is leading the investigation along with local police. there is a focus on trying to figure out the motive of the shooter, 20-year-old thomas crookes. in his neighborhood near pittsburgh they were going door-to-door try to ask neighbors what they knew of this man. our latest reporting is the feds have gotten little information useful from the phone they have recovered to try to figure out the motive. in the meantime they are also trying to figure out what caused this historic, remarkable breakdown in security, that somebody could get access to a roof so close to this rally stage as a former president was speaking. huge unanswered questions here a few hundred miles away from the convention. >> it's an excellent point and in fact we have new video that has just come out that it shows a number of those rally goers just minute
