american civilians are being evacuated from iraq tonight, and david martin has details on that. david. >> reporter: scott, more than 200 american contractors, along with a hand full of defense department personnel, are being evacuated from balad, the many iraqi airbase about 50 miles north of baghdad. there are several hundred contractors from all nations working there, helping to train the iraqi air force, but they are now being put on aircraft chartered by the companies they work for and flown back to baghdad. it will take until tomorrow to complete the evacuation. so far, there has been no decision to evacuate americans, including diplomats and military personnel, from baghdad, and that is one of the big decisions president obama now faces. >> pelley: david, thank you. vice president biden called iraq's president today to say that the united states is prepared to intensify its support. major garrett is at the white house. major, what do they mean by that? >> reporter: scott, the whois wants to defeat the insurgency, and the iraqi government has asked for u.s. air support to stem the advancing threat.
