the grand jury said michael slager killed scott without justification. let's get more from martin savidge. >> reporter: good morning, john and christine. for the family of the victim walter scott, it was another difficult day, but it confirms his death was not in vain. federal charges against a police officer in these circumstances are rare. as we already know, the video taken by a bystander of michael slager, the police officer shooting walter scott is disturbing. the federal charges include deprivation of rights under the color of law which means the police officer used excessive force to deprive the rights in the case of walter scott to take his life. the second charge of using a gun during the commission of the crime and on top of that, a third charge that says he obstructed justice. the implication there is that michael slager lied to officers when he said that walter scott was charging toward him. that's why he fired his weapon. again, very significant charges. if convicted on the federal charges, slager could get life. john and christine. >> martin, thanks for that. >>> ben

the officer accused gunning down walter scott during a traffic stop last year in south carolina. let's get right to martin charles ton police officer is already in custody and held on state charges of murder but these are federal charges to come down. i should stress to you this is extremely rare that law enforcement officers are charged federally but that is the case here because it is considered so horrific how walter scott died. so the first charge is essentially deprivation of rights, to say as a law enforcement officer, the use of extreme force was clear here, five shots in the back as walter scott run away. another charge federally is the use of a gun during the commission of a crime and lastly then the third, obstruction of justice. this goes to michael schrager who told investigators that walter scott was attacking him with the police officer's taser, that's why he says he had to fire on him. but the video that came to light showed a very different story, was walter scott running away. he was shot five times in the back. this all was back in april of last year. it happened after a traffic stop. th
