. >> cnn's scott mcclain joins us live from the ukrainian capitol. let's start with the latest from the front lines. >> it is not looking good for really either side right now. the battle for lysychansk is not looking good. the russians have entrenched themselves. they denied that they have surrounded the city and are in control. the ukrainians said they managed to successfully fire on and destroy military equipment convoy or column just outside of the city. they say the rush schaabs had sustained really heavy losses in this battle for lysychansk. caught in this are thousands of civilians who have been confined to their basements. it is far too dangerous to leave the city. they also suspect it has been mined. lysychansk is the last major city that has been left in luhansk that hasn't been taken. if the russians have taken it or will take it, it means they'll effectively be in control of the entire nation. meanwhile, belarusian president said ukraine fired missiles in its direction. they say belarusian forces were able to strike them down. this comes

. >> scott mcclain is keeping an eye on all developments in ukraine and joins us live from kyiv.nt zelenskyy just visited the front lines. what more can you tell us about that visit? >> reporter: we've just gotten word that there has been a missile strike in the city of kharkiv against a residential area. there's actually a cnn team on the ground there who says that it is a two-story building that has been badly damaged. local officials there are also reporting injuries and reminding people that when those air raid sirens go off, people need to take shelter. you mentioned the visit by zelenskyy. he was in the southern part of ukraine, visiting the troops, visiting the front lines and visiting a hospital. perhaps he is trying to sort of rally the troops ahead of a ukrainian push to take back parts of occupied territory in the southern part of the country. the deputy prime minister of ukraine was warning people who live in the kherson and zap riva regions to evacuate, even if it means getting sent toward russia or going toward crimea, saying, look, the ukrainians are going to be mo

for more we want to bring in scott mcclain. he joins us live from kiev. it appears russia now controls the region in the east. but ukraine vows to regroup and fight back while calling for more heavy weapons from the west, what is the latest on all of this? hey rosemary, look, this is mission accomplished for the russians at least that's how they would very much like to see it. partially accomplished i should say. they have far more goals in ukraine they would like to accomplish. but taking the entire region is certainly one of them. the leader of the break away lpr region said that this day is one that's going to go down in history. now, the ukrainian army chief in that region said the ukrainians still do have a very small toe hold in the region. in one other small village near the boundary. but effectively the russians control everything else. by in large, they have taken the region. now the ukrainians in their decision to withdraw said they wanted to preserve the lives of their troops. and there's one good reason for that, because they say they were out

scott mcclain joins us live from kyiv. let's start with the rocket and artillery attacks on several ukrainian cities. what more can you tell us? >> reporter: what stands out to me is the city of mykolaiv. it had rocket attacks on a university. there was more this morning, though they're trying to figure out exactly what the damage was and the casualties were. and the mayor says that of 142 days of war, they have only had 21 that have been quiet. 21 without artillery strikes. so that southern part of ukraine has been especially dangerous, especially active as of late of course because of ukrainians have been trying to launch their own push to take back territory around the city of kherson. you also mentioned the rocket attacks in daneap row. there was one on a residential area where two were injured. others may have been trapped under the rubble after a rocket attack last night that injured 16 and killed three and in an industrial area and in total officials say as of late there have been 57 rocket attacks on the city. and

scott mcclain is on the ground as rescue personnel continue to search for victims. >> reporter: mid-morningfar from any front lines. three russian missiles landed here obliterating a medical center, damaging buildings, including offices and a theater. rescue workers combed through the wreckage and amid this destruction, had little hope of recovering anyone alive. throughout the day, the list of casualties grew. more than 20 people, including three children. dozen injured and many of them in critical condition and others unaccounted for. among the victim, this 3-year- old killed in her stroller. her mother was injured, according to the child's father. what the russia's target might have been is unknown. the defense ministry has had nothing to say about the attack. ukrainians say seven missiles were launch and had four were intercepted and tragically three were not. people here in a state of shock. these business owners, their windows were blown out. >> we are living in a beautiful, peaceful city attacked by a rocket. what for? >> reporter: ulga didn't seek shelter when the sirens went off ha

cnn's scott mcclain joins us live from the ukrainian capital.et's start with the latest from leashy sainsing. >> yes, one of the cities in the eastern part of the country that has really faced some of the fiercest fighting, some of the most intense shelling along the front lines in recent weeks. right now we understand there are some 15,000 people who are still there, not because they couldn't have evacuated but because they chose not to. now it's far too late for that. for the last few days, local officials have said the people are largely confined to their basements, sheltering because of the intense shelling. now the luhansk, the militia of the luhansk people's republic, one of the breakaway regions of eastern ukraine, they claim that they have managed to completely surround the city and are in control and are simply working to get rid of the last remnants of ukrainian nationalists or ukrainian soldiers who might be left behind. the ukrainians, though, deny that. they say they are not in control and they have not managed to completely surroun

scott mcclain picks up the story. >> reporter: snake island has played an out size role in this war since day when ukrainian troops stationed on this small out post in the black sea refused to surrender it to a russian warship just off the coast. it is milltarially important because it's given the russians a launch pad very close to the odesa region. a region they have not been able to reach by land. it's economically important because whoever controls that island, well, they also control the shipping lanes in that area. the russians claim that they vacated the island as a good will gesture to the ukrainians. the good will did not last long with this most recent batch of air strikes . the ukrainians claim they struck the island uses phosphorous bombs dropped from planes. it can burn right through human flesh. the ukrainians are trying to clear the island of mines or traps before setting up a more permanent out post there. they leave the russians were trying the clear the island of their remaining equipment. >>> still to come, a attorney for the man shot and killed by police has seen body

. >>> and for more, let's bring in cnn's scott mcclain, live from kyiv. good to see you, scott.sts reporting new strikes on do donetsk. what else do we know on this? >> reporter: yeah, these strikes they say killed three people, injured dozens more. they included a strike that caught a rail yard on fire and caught several cars of a passenger train on fire though miraculously no one was killed. this is unverified row showing fires burning in -- video that is showsing fires burning in an banded market in the area. it is difficult to verify anything out of the region but media says schools, apartment buildings, and houses were all damaged in this attack. now that the russians have taken the entire luhansk region, it doesn't seem like they're wasting time in moving on to the donetsk region also. the ukrainians have reported shelling, heavy shelling along the front line to the north in the direction of a city in the northern part of donetsk region. there's also heavy shelling reported in the southern region, as well. there were also missile strikes reported outside of that region alt

scott mcclain is live now. what is the latest?ll tell you they're out manned and they're not sitting on their hand. they may have hit an ammunition cache in donetsk. the local governor in the luhansk region says the russians are taking heavy losses, which is hampering their ability to move that front line forward. cnn can't confirm both side. pro-russian commentators suggested the battle to take the region of luhansk was far too costly in terms of human lives. the other things that's getting in the russian's way is the donetsk river, which the russian seem to be held up behind. they may be there for months. the ukrainians think they can hold them there. unfortunately, the expectation is the russians will continue to bomb and shel the towns and cities on the other side with increasing frequency. one other thing to mention, john, that is that yesterday there were air ride sirens that sounded in cities across the country, including here in kiev for the first time in at least a week. four of those missiles ended up hitting a city in w

scott mcclain reports. >> reporter: ukraine says that it is slowly but surely taking back territory inhe southern part of the country. the military won't say where they have made gains, but there is some evidence suggesting they have made modest advances on the border region. ukrainian forces now claim russian troops are hiding themselves amongst the civilian population in order to avoid getting hit by ukrainian strikes. keen to utilize their newfound artillery fire powers by striking at russian supply lines deep into russian held territory. ukraine yans say they have seen evidence suggesting russian military equipment has moved through mariupol headed west and suggest that equipment may be headed toward kherson. in the eastern part of the country, there is little evidence to suggest that the front lines have moved much at all in recent days. but the russians continue to bomb and shell the towns, villages and cities on the other side of the front line. the most recent where local officials say at least one person was killed and more than 12 injured. scott mclain, cnn, kyiv. >>> good to
