i'm scott mcgrew, nbc bay area news. >>> small cars that get great gas mileage may be safer than you might think. the insurance institute for highway safety recently put 13 of the smallest and most fuel-efficient cars in the country through a series of rigorous safety tests. none of the cars tested poorly at all. in fact, six of them earned the institute's top safety pick designation. the cars which topped the list were the 2012 ford focus, the 2012 honda civic, the 2011 hyundai elantra, a lexus, and nissan, and the 2011 toyota prius. and analysts say today's results is a turnaround from a few years ago when small cars struggled to get those top ratings. >>> economists noticed an increase in unemployment claims last week. the number of people registering for the benefits rose by 10,000. the labor department says that brings the total number for april to about 424,000 people. some economists fear this is a trend and predict the number of may jobs added will fall below 200,000. that's a sign that the economy is still sluggish. >>> and still ahead, tonight at 6:00, speaking out. what th

scott mcgrew, why would they want to do that?ur phone trusts the airport, mar larks and the library and the coffee shop. german researchers warn that most android phones can be spoofed into giving up personal data if those phones think they're communicating with a public wi-fi connection that they have talked to before. so if you tell your phone to go ahead and connect to the public wi-fi at the airport, hackers theoretically can pretend they are the airport wi-fi in some other public place and your phone will connect to it. now, google says it has a fix but only a fraction of phones have been updated. you hear about these sort of things fairly often, hackers can do this, hackers can do that. honestly it's far more likely some guy will steal your phone while you're buying your latte than steal your data. >>> netflix now accounts for a majority of data on the internet. this according to a company called sandvine which measured all those 1s and 0s and figured out netflix streaming movies are about a third of all internet data. firs

scott mcgrew says every parent already knew this. >> absolutely, yeah.consumer reports" says there are 20 million minors on facebook that's under 18. 5 million of those are under the age of 13. that's the minimum age that facebook sets for its members. you are absolutely right. if you have a child who's on facebook, you are already know some of the kids on his or her friends list are much younger than they're claiming. oftentimes they do with that parents' knowledge. they say they're in high school. they're really in junior high or elementary and that gets them around facebook restrictions. facebook says it is aware of the problem and it's working on the problem. it's not really facebook's fault. if you lie about who you are in the agreement, well, that's on you, not facebook. so is allowing your 13-year-old to open an account on facebook illegal? it doesn't violate criminal law. the children's online protection act says kids under 13 need their parents' permission to enter data on a website, so if you do have your parents' permission, you're okay there.

scott mcgrew has rare, good news for california's economy. we need good news. >> we do. we don't get hard numbers about how many californians are working but the unemployment department, the state added more jobs in the first quarter, that's january, february, march than it did in all of the year 2010. california's unemployment level is still terrible, 12%, but on the whole, with the enormous state, it's 12%. when you look at the bay area and the tech heavy south bay in particular, it's much brighter. meanwhile, apple sent a letter to congress explaining how the phones work and why they gather all that data about you. the house committee on energy and commerce wanted the answers. google and apple face the senate at tomorrow's hearings. >>> the british newspaper, the sun, reports the royal highness, head of the state of the united kingdom and 54 commonwealth nations bought herself an ipad two. her grandsons taught her how to use it. she has two ipads. there was a queen of elizabeth one in the shakespearean era, then the queen elizabeth ii. >> what is this angry birds abou
