business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is live in the newsroom with more on this developing story. good morning, scott. >> good morning. this dates back to last year. we remember the massive lay-off and bankruptcy earlier this fall in at solyndra. let me remind you of the earlier lay-off this time last year, november 3rd, 2010. that's when solyndra laid off for the first time exactly one day after the 2010 midterm elections. the republican-led committee investigating solyndra and its loans says that's darn suspicious. it says it has e-mails from solyndra's biggest investor, argonaut equities that says the department of energy did ask solyndra to hold off on the lay-offs. in the memo the doe doesn't say specifically to hold off until after the congressional elections. it never explains why november 3rd was picked as a date. the department of energy secretary stephen chu will be testifying tomorrow before the house energy and commerce committee. i have no doubt that will be one of the very first questions they put to him, why november 3rd. back to you. let's check in with meteorologis

scott mcgrew joins us with the details. good morning, scott. >> good morning to you. it looks like solyndra may be sold in pieces because no one wants to make what solyndra made. there's no reason to buy the whole factory, lock, stock and barrel. solyndra tells a bankruptcy court in delaware, it will probably have to auction off the machinery, real estate and patents separately. that hurts taxpayers because we invested hundreds of millions of dollars in solyndra and we want our money back. to make it worse, under a strange deal, washington is allowing private investors to get paid first. we're in the back of the line for what's looking like a smaller and smaller pool of money. so why won't anyone buy solyndra out rite? solyndra made thin film solar which is state-of-the-art but much more expensive than the poly silicon solar cells you see everywhere. solyndra figured out how to turn gold into silver. frankly, nobody wants to do that. >> thank you very much. >>> most of us certainly know how tight times are right now. imagine the struggle local charities are facing. th

business and tech reporter scott mcgrew tells us when facebook will go public.a big one. >> it's going to be huge. we know it was coming. between april and june of next year. this accord thog the "wall street journal" which says the planned filing would raise $10 billion and give the company an overall worth of $100 billion. facebook would be selling just a small part of itself, and it would give facebook twice the value of hewlett-packard. it could also give mark zuckerberg a value of $25 billion. that's best guesstimate. zuckerberg probably owns a quarter of the company outright. we're not sure. 100 billion divided into quarters. you remember the movie "the social network kwlts. the founder and the plot there. well, he would be assuming he hasn't sold many shares and assuming they haven't diluted it too much, 5 billion. so at the end of the movie he feels he's been treated unjustly by them. >> edward. edward! all right. it will be interesting to watch. all right. thank you very much. >> wow, caltran is asking prosecutors to reconsider and file charges against

scott mcgrew joining us now. scott, clearly things getting tougher and tougher for netflix. >>> netflix ceo reid hastings under a lot of pressure from disbelieving investors who watched the stock crater. the stock fell again tuesday, a day after the company raced millions by selling stock to a private firm. it's rare for this to happen and ironically it comes right after netflix tried buying back its own stock, but at a much higher price. here is the tale of the tape: netflix spent $2 million earlier this year buying back its own shares at $222 a share and then sold shares at $70 to $85 a share to raise money it needed. google must have looked itself up on google and figured out it's a search engine. it's cutting all kinds of programs that aren't core to its strengths including programs to invent clean energy. the company says it will still be active in buying and supporting clean energy, but it's not going to be the company that invents it. >>> san francisco-based virgin america continues to have trouble with its

scott mcgrew is here, telling us strong holiday sales have traders in a very good mood. >> good morning to you. what a good day it's been so far on the markets. the nasdaq opened 3% higher, right at the opening buzzer. the dow gave 300 points right off the top. local companies doing very well. electronic arts is up better than 5% after an upgrade. even netflix is up 7% this morning. a lot of the good news -- good mood comes from black friday. black friday sales up better than 16%, compared to this time last year. one cautionary tale. last year, we saw holiday shopping early and then a slow slide. let's remember, the economy is still struggling. 14 million americans still out of work. of course, today is cyber monday, created by a woman working in the marketing department at the national retail federation back in 2005. she noticed the number of people shopping online jumped the monday after thanksgiving weekend because back in 2005 not very many of us had computers at home and we didn't have high-speed internet, so we came to work to shop. of course, now, we can buy stuff from our high-s
